Daisy Shirley was born in Shirley Castle, Province of Portland, Jamaica, West Indies. She was the youngest of 12 children born to Samuel Laidley Shirley and Anne Isobella Silvera Shirley.
At age 15, Daisy migrated to America to join her brother and sister in Evanston, Illinois after her mother's death. She became a U.S. Citizen at age 19 in the year 1919.
She received her education at Evanston Township High School and Evanston Business College in Illinois, and later, graduated from Jackson State College, Jackson, Mississippi.
Her late husband, Dr. Jacob L. Reddix, was the fifth President of Jackson State (University), and conferred her a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He served 27 years as President of Jackson State.
Daisy's work career incompassed Business Office Management in Evanston and Chicago, Illinois and Gary, Indiana. She later worked for many years in the Jackson State University Business office. SHE WAS FIRST LADY OF JACKSON STATE FOR 27 YEARS and served as Official Hostess. She is endeared to thousands of Jackson State Faculty, Staff, Students, Alumni, Friends, and Family.
Jackson State University will honor Daisy at a Program and Reception at the Universiy on Saturday, April 8th.
Daisy Shirley Reddix remains active in many Church, Civic, Social and University activities today! She loves reading, music, travel and... wants to go back to Jamaica one more time!
She attributes a long life to "proper eating habits" and to "getting her rest"... no smoking or drinking.
She gains strength in her faith and strong belief in the Almighty. She carries the "Great Physician" with her at all times!!
