"...Those tenants on a long lease added wings with the landlord's help, though any major alterations just to suit the tenant must be made by him. In Bourton freeholders added a few lean-to's which crop up in inventories as a place to store firewood. William Shirley left in 1602 two such "lean-twos"..."

A William Shirley was churchwarden of Cropredy in 1693. In 1696, the Shirley's tenancy of the Lower Mill in Cropredy passed (likely by marriage) to John Allen, miller of Cropredy who had a son named William Shirley Allen. A William Shirley of Cropredy died 1695.

Pec 15.145; Pec 52/2/108 Will of Edward Shirley, sen, wheelwright of Cropredy (page 2) - I Edward Shirley of Cropredy Oxfordshire wheelwright....the rest of my stock to be valued and parted equally between my son Edward and my wife Mary whilst she is single, otherwise to my son Edward. To son Edward part of my gound which I use for a timber yard and the shop adjoining for his own use, but may not let it whilst wife Mary is alive and singe without consent. To wife Mary the house I live in and garden while she is a widow, otherwise to son Edward to use during his life and after that at his death my grandson Edward paying 15 pound sterling to be divided between his ?5 sisters and my son son Edward other male children females born after this date are excluded except my grandson Edward etc etc. Son Edward named executor/ Appoint William the son of John Eagles and John Geigould both of Cropred to be trustees for my grandchildren. married Hannah ______ [?Harrold on 7 Dec 1780 at Harbury Warw.] She was born about 1759 (burial record) at Kineton Warwickshire (1851 census, age 92); She was buried at Cropredy 15 May 1852, age 93.

Aff. 105.98; 239/2/31 Will of Edward Shirley, parish sexton of Cropredy page 2 page 3 codicil - all my messuage malthouse etc in the City of Coventry now in the occupation of Thomas Wynn as leasee to my wife Sarah Shirley for natural life and after decease to Rev John Ballard vicar of Cropredy and Wm Smith of Cropredy to hold upon trust, to sell at auction or private [long trust verbiage] wife to have use of all household furntire for life and after decease to divide amongst all my children. 10L to daughter Hannah Arkell Robinson wife of John Robinson of Perhanger in parish of Passenham Northampton, butcher . Benefit of my daughter Sarah Shirley.
