A connection between Stephen Shirley, perfumer of London (shown below), and Rev Thomas Shirley, baptist minister of Sevenoaks Kent has now been proven. Stephen's daughter Emily (chr as Sarah) married Alfred Bilton and his Will stated that Emily was the neice of Rev Thomas Shirley - thus Stephen Shirley and Rev Thomas Shirley were brothers. Rev Thomas Shirley died in Sevenoaks Kent in 1858 and Stephen Shirley retired to Sevenoaks, appearing in the census there in 1861. Interestingly, Thomas Shirley's house servant, Mary Ann Harper/Hopper, who appears in his 1841 and 1851 household, next appears in the household of Stephen Shirley in 1861. Stephen Shirley was born in Little London, Brill Buckinghamshire (according to census) and at least one source claims Rev Thomas Shirley was also born at nearby Brill.

Rev. Thomas Shirley, Baptist Minister at Sevenoaks, Kent
(British Museum)

Obituary of the Rev. Thomas Shirley, Late of Sevenoaks - The Rev Thomas Shirley for nearly fifty years the paster an dminister of the church and congregation at Sevenoaks was born at Brill in Buckinghamshire on 10th March 1775. His parents were respectable and moral and attended the parish church with their children. Thomas was sent when a youth to Bermondsey to learn the wool trade. At the age of sixteen he had a severe affliction and was confined to his bed with a bad leg. At this time he was the subject of serious reflections on his condition as a fallen sinner....He attended chiefly the ministry of the Rev J C Mason son of the author of "The Spiritual Treasury" and occassionally went to hear Mr Romaine at St Ann's Blackfriars... At length attended the ministry of Mr Hemsworth at the Paragon Chapel Bermondsey New Road....By invitation of the church (at Sevenoaks) he engaged in the stated ministration of the word in that place in April 1808, and on August 1 1810 he was publicly ordained to the pastorate....His excellent companion, with whom he was united in June 1802....On the morning, his beloved companion was seized with pain in the arm. She went down- the vital spark was gone and our dear friend was called to give up the desier of his eyes with this sudden stroke. (Ed: Note, Bessell's Green Bapt cemetery says wife Susanna died in 1850)....He resigned the pastorate in August 1852...On Friday Nov 26 (Ed: 1858), the mortal remains of Mr Shirley were conveyed to the vault at Bessels Green to be laid with those of hhis late dear companion...- The Primitive Church (or Baptist Magazine, Vol 15-16, p 19; Jan 1859

He leaves a daughter 7[ ] years of age, and a son of about 70. Mr. Shirley, who retained his faculties until almost the last moments of his life, was brother to the late Mr. Thomas Shirley, who for several years was pastor of the Sevenoaks Baptist Church.

1891 Will of Stephen Shirley - 11 August - Administration of the personal estate of Stephen Shirley late of St John's in the parish of Sevenoaks in the co of Kent widower who died 19 July 1891 at St John's was granted at the principal registry to Stephen Shirley of 72 Earl Street Edgware Road in the co of Middlesex gentleman and son of the Next of Kin. Email 2015 - Emily/Sarah (let's call her Sarah) was born 22.05.1831 in Middlesex, but she was not baptized until 21.05.1845 at St. Mary, Bryanston Square. She was the 7th of nine children born between 1816 and 1837 to Stephen Shirley, perfumer of 22, Princess Street, Marylebone, and Margaret Maitland, the daughter of another perfumer of Golden Square, Soho (her maternal grandfather was yet another perfumer, George Watt of Hanover Square - they seem to have been very clannish, these perfumers). Stephen Shirley and Margaret Maitland married 04.03.1815 at St. James, Westminster. Stephen retired to Sevenoaks Kent and lived to be 100 years old (pretty unusual in those days. There was a mishap when he was due to be buried in 1891 - the shaft of the cart carrying his coffin broke and the coffin thrown off. Fortunately, it was still empty.). Stephen was born in Oakley, Bucks in 1790 (Brill and Oakley are only a mile or two apart). His older brother Thomas was a Baptist Minister in Sevenoaks for fifty years. He was mentioned in my gg uncle Alfred Bilton's Will. So far, I am sure that I have my facts right. Stephen may have been the son of another Stephen Shirley of Oakley, born 1755 who, in turn, may have been the son of Michael Shirley, who married Sarah Lovett in Nottingham in 1748, but that is a bit speculative. There seem to have been a lot of Shirleys farming in that part of Bucks, so you may well have a member who is descended from one of them.My main interest is not really in the earlier Shirleys (although it would be fun if they were connected to the famous Admiral). Most of all, I would like to know more about Stephen Shirley, the perfumer, and his family and, if possible, make contact with a descendant.

married Margaret Maitland on 4 March 1815 at St James Westminster, daughter of a London perfumer of Golden Sq Soho, and grandaughter of perfumer George Watt of Hanover Sq London; she was age 45 in 1841 census; She died prior to 1851 census when her husband was listed as a widower.

Email 2015 - I have been researching the Right Rev Samuel Hinds, Bishop of Norwich from 1849 to 1857. He married (secretly) his cook, who was baptized Sarah Shirley but always called herself Emily. The resulting scandal provoked his resignation. Emily was the daughter of Stephen Shirley, a perfumer of Marylebone, Middlesex. After the Bishop died in 1872, Emily married my great grand uncle Alfred Bilton, a solicitor of Brixton, Surrey.

1902 Will of Alfred Bilton - "....I bequeath to louisa Whitehead a niece of my late wife Emily Sarah Bilton and the wife of William Abraham Whitehead of No 85 Penge Road Anerley for her separate use free from all marital control the portrait of The Reverend Thomas Shirley an uncle of my said late wife and the sum of L2,000...."
