It has been a while since I posted a question about our Shirleys so I thought I would repost incase any new visitors may have a connection. My ggrandfather Walter was born in Hodge Lane, Salford in 1848 to Samuel Francis Shirley and Ann Wager Pidcock. His father Samuel puts his place of birth as London or Middlesex on censuses, around 1816. Samuel was connected to the Manchester company of Samuel Shirley & Co, which traded in woolen cloth. When Samuel and Ann first married they returned (from Manchester) to London and their first four children were born in Islington. They had returned to Manchester by 1850. All of the children except Walter attended a school in Coventry run by Eliza Shirley who was listed as their aunt. She returned to London when she gave up the school and was connected to a Mellicent Shirley and her son Washington but I am not sure how. Walter appears to have gone to a different school. Walter married three times, my ggrandmother being Ellen Emma Biddulph who died when my grandfather was born. We do not know of any children by the previous two marriages. Although it would be nice to go further back and we believe Samuel Francis Shirleys father was named Samuel, because my grandfather was adopted out after his mothers death, it would be lovely to trace his brothers and sisters if possible. His brothers were with their father in 1901 census but his sister Sylvia was not. Perhaps she was with relatives while very young but as she signed her fathers death certificate she obviously returned to the family at some stage.
They are Francis Howard Shirley born 1889, Manchester. Possibly a soldier, we cannot find any marriage but do have a possible death. Walter Shirley born 1888, married Alice Ann Catterall and unfortunately died in 1910 before the birth of his son Walter T Shirley in 1911. Lastly a sister, Sylvia Ann Wager Shirley, born in Stoke on Trent. Sylvia married George Barlow in 1910 and had several children including Francis Howard,Eric, George, Emma, Joseph, Sylvia and Vera.
We seem to have a connection to Shirleys in Staffordshire as our DNA test has shown but as yet that elusive common ancestor still evades us. It would be wonderful to hear from anyone descended from my grandfathers brothers or sister but also from anyone with a link to the family at any stage or perhaps to Samuel Shirley & Co, Manchester.
All the best, Lisa.
