This family lived near the little community of Leota in Scott County, Indiana. John and Christiana name was spelled Shierley on the 1880 census of Indiana. Mom always pronounced it like "Sharley".  The 1880 census indicated that the elder John (father of John Harrison) was born about 1823 in "Wurttemberg".

"Family of John Harrison and Mary Jane (Howell) Shirley. John Harrison Shirley is the third adult seated from left and Mary is the only woman seated in the front row. The man seated to the far right is John Larkin Shirley. John Larkin Shirley's wife, Bertha Ellen (Tash) Shirley is standing at far right in the back row. John and Bertha's daughter, Margriet "Jewell" Shirley is seated on her father's lap, and their son, Kenneth Grant Shirley is standing to the left of John."

The photo was probably taken around 1921 as John Harrison Shirley died in 1922
