William Shirley (Paul's brother) came from Mothill parish,
County Kilkenny. He was Anglican but his first wife was Catholic.
William Shirley was one of the first Kilkenny Ireland families
to emigrate to Canada about 1817; not because of the potato famine,
which occurred much later, but because of the poor economic conditions
in England and Ireland following the Napoleonic Wars with France.
Initially William and his brother in law, Michael Cahill, and
families settled in Lanark County Ontario and then in 1829 became
sharecroppers near March road on the Ottawa River, were he accidentally
drowned in 1846. This area is now called SHIRLEY'S BAY.
After William's death his son, Edward, took over the family farm.
Edward's brothers, Thomas and Paul, owned other farms nearby
on the street now called SHIRLEY BLVD.
