It comprises seventy-five acres of land of good quality; it has all been under cultivation, and yields an average return of about thirty-eight bushels of wheat, and sixty of oats to the acre. The original homestead, a sod whare, has given place to a substantial dwelling house, and the farmyward is surrounded with a number of well constructed out buildings. Mr. Edward Henry Shirley, father of the present proprietor, purchased the property about 1883, and worked it successfully until 1900, when he retired. He was born in Buckinghamshire, England, in 1837, and arrived in New Zealand by the ship “Mermaid,” on her first trip. He now resides in Christchurch, and has a family of five sons and three daughters. Mr. Charles Shirley was born at Linwood, Christchurch, in 1874, educated at the Ricoarton school, and trained to agriculture on his father's farm. EMAIL from Brian December 2017 - my 2 x Gt Grandfather James King married Martha Jane Shirley on 5th August 1855 in Bermondsey, London. Her father Edward Shirley was born in Little Landon, Buckinghamshire 1807 and died in Christchurch New Zealand on 2nd May 1882. Martha’s brother John Richard Shirley was born 6th June 1851 in Bermondsey and died 10th July 197 in Balmain North, NSW Australia. Last year my wife and I were in Christchurch for a couple of days and I tried to find Edward’s grave in Barbadoes Cemetery but only had a few hours and due to the passage of time and vandalism I was unable to find his resting place. I did get a map from the local genealogy department in the library with the plot number but just could not decipher the map properly. On the positive side, when we were in Sydney I visited North Balmain and found the building that John built and where he lived and ran his grocery business from. I also found his grave in Waverley Cemetery which was quite moving. A beautiful place overlooking Bondi.
