The parish of St. Mary Newington Surrey in England is one we've kept our eye on for the origins of the Northumberland VA Shirleys.

Elizabeth Jadwin of St. Mary Newington Surrey England

The 1638 will of Elizabeth Jadwin of St. Mary Newington Surrey, the widow of Thomas Jadwin, named her sister Sibill Wright and "cousin" Thomas Sherley.

According to the article in the New Eng Hist and Gen Soc. Journal, Jadwin is the step mother of Robert Jadwyn whose son John patented 650 acres of land on the S. side of the Rappahanooc R. in Virginia in 1658.

Supposedly Sybil Wright's sister Elizabeth Jadwin's maiden name was Baker. She was a Simonds at the time of her marriage to Jadwin. Therefore Sybil's maiden name was Baker.

Administration of Sybil Sherley Wright of Newington Surrey- 1644 Sybil Wright als Sherley -16th day became known Thomas Sherley natural son [filio naturali] of Sybil Wright als Sherley of St. Maria Newington in the county of Surrey lately deceased granted administration of estate and took oath.

Administration of Thomas Sherley of Newington Surrey - Thomas Sherley - 27th day became known Joanne Sherley widow and relict of Thomas Sherley lately deceased of St. Maria Newington in the county of Surrey granted administration of the deceased estate and took oath.

Another set of abstracts suggest that Sybil Wright had married a Malthus previously to marrying Shirley. In the 1640s, a John Malthus sued Sybil Malthus and then after her death sued her son Thomas Shirley. This would suggest that her Malthus husband died and the son sued for his inheritance. And then sued Thomas Shirley after Sybil's death (and following her remarriage to Wright). A John Malthus was mentioned in the 1638 will of Elizabeth Jadwin (above)

The Malthus name is a bit rare, and the main Malthus (Malthouse) family bunch comes from Shinfield in Berkshire...where there are lots of Shirleys.

Connection to Robert Sherley of Westmoreland Co Virginia

1. Robert Jadwyn (related to Sybil Sherley Wright) patented land both in Westmoreland and Northumberland.

2. Jonathan Jadwyn (brother of Robert) is in Westmoreland Co and is involved with John Dodman, gent who Robert Shirley seems to be heavily involved with (as a clerk?) both in Virginia and Maryland

May 1656 (sic). Ger. Dodson attorney of Mr. Wm. Botham do authorize my lo: freinds Mr John Dodman or Mr. Wm Webb my attorneys to acknowledge the sale of land which I assigned over toRichard Heabeard with the pattent. Signed: Ger. Thomas Shirley of Northumberland

While the link between Thomas Shirley of N'land and Surrey England is at best speculation at this point, it is interesting to note that Thomas Shirley was transported into Virginia (probably from Maryland) with a person named Robert Bridley [Bradley]

21 Feb 1658/59 . Order Book 1657-1661 pg 201 These are to certify that Mary Rayner widowe made her right appeare to 500 acres for transportacon of 10 persons into this country: Thomas Sherly, Judith Palmer, Hen. Hapney, Demanen Gamber, Eliz Johnson, Siserly Crowde, Robert Bridley [Bradley?], Henry Reade, William Landrum, Henry Rayner.

AND THEN

1689. Court of May 22, 1689: Petition of Robert Bradley, Exor... of the last will of John Roach, probate to him by etwe of Edward Williams, John West and Thomas Shirley

Supposedly, this Robert Bradley was born in Bermondsey Southwark Surrey (the same location as Newington)

Robert Bradley was apparently convicted of crimes before coming to the United States. It is unknown what the crimes were, however it is believed that they were either political or religious, ie: acts that were construed as against the Crown or the Church of England. But on 2/9/1656 he was pardoned of all crimes providing he be transported to the plantations
(United States) as soon as possible and does not try to escape for 10 years. Records of his conviction apprently have not been found. He was listed as being from St. Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey.

WAS THOMAS SHIRLEY ALSO TRANSPORTED WITH BRADLEY FOR THE SAME REASON (SOME SORT OF POLITICAL/RELIGIOUS BEHAVIOR)? WAS THOMAS SHIRLEY FROM THIS PART OF SURREY (A CATHOLIC STRONGHOLD)
