Elizabeth Shirley was the mother of: (source: VA Chancery suit 1833)

1. Joseph Shirley - He was a soldier in the War of 1812. He enlisted at the age of 18; born in Bedford Co Va; occupation farmer; was very tall, with auburn hair, blue eyes and fair skin. His widow's pension application made by wife Eliza Elden states she married Joseph Shirley on 6 February 1840 by Wm (or James) Leftwich and that "neither she nor her husband were previously married". She further claims that Joseph died in the 18 March 1848 (she moved to Rockbridge Co VA in 1874 and died 8 Aug 1880)

married Nancy Carter

2. Ellender Shirley

Bedford Co Chancery Lawsuit - "Joseph Sherley leaves Nancy in abt 1838 to marry Eliza E Elder in 1840". (Nancy listed in 1840 Bedford census she had 1b-5-10 (Joseph P), 1 g <5-Sarah Jane, 1 g 5-10 (Eliza) living in Bedford w/ her.) "Nancy sends Joseph & Sarah Jane with William & Tabitha Stinnett Carter (see 1850 Bedford census) & Eliza with Braxton & Mary Carter (see 1850). Bet 1850-1859, Sarah Jane, Joseph, & Eliza consider themselves Carter's since their father left when they were under 5. Sarah Jane & Joseph join Eliza living with Braxton & Mary. Braxton left Mary for Tennessee bet 1855-1860, Nancy attends Sarah Jane Francis' 1859 marriage to give permission her to "intermarry" with George W (son of Nancy's brother Littleberry, so they are 1st cousins once removed). Mary moves in with her nephew (now son), Joseph P Carter (see 1860 Bedford census, Joseph leaves bet 1861-1869 & Mary is living with daughters Cassandra & Sallie Flippo in 1880). "In 1888, Sarah F applies for her cousin (& step brother-in-laws) Civil War pension because Sarah J was gone, remarried, or dead.?"
