(1). Wilburn Feb 26,
1828 Shelby Co. IL d. 1880 Jefferson Co. KS m. Louisa Prather
Feb 3, 1848 Lynn Co. MO. She died in 1880.
In 1849 Wilburn joined a wagon
train with his own ox team and went to California where he mined
for gold, quite successfully. Later, he came to Lynn Co. MO.
In 1853, Mr. and Mrs. Shirley and their three children, Margaret,
John Lafayette and Marion Moses came overland by ox team to Lecompton.
Wilburn, like his father, Isaac, was a "free state"
man and was a radical Abolitionist. In 1860, he sold the 160
acres in Lecompton and located in Kaw Township, Jefferson Co.
Kansas. This move in 1860 was the beginning of the "Jefferson
County: Shirleys. After settling in Kaw Twp., Wilburn became
prominent among the citizens. For many years he was a Justice
of the Peace and in politics was a useful member of the Republican
party. His religious belief coincided with that of the Baptist
church but there being no organization of that kind in the community,
he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Both Wilburn and
his wife Louisa died in the fall of 1880, just three weeks apart.
Four of Wilburn's sons lived and farmed in Jefferson Co.
They were John L., Marion Moses, George Thomas "Tom",
and Ennus P.

log school school houses where the tuition was made by subscriptions.
He remained with his parents, working for his father until he
reached his majority, when he took charge of the farm home and
conducted it until 1877. In Topeka, Mar 4, 1876 he married Plutina
Hodges who was a native of Surrey Co. North Carolina who had
moved to Kansas in 1872 with her parents. After their marriage,
Lafe began his farming operation with forty acres of raw, uncleared
land and by strict attention to business, energy, industry and
perseverance he added to his possessions until he owned and operated
300 acres. A larger home was built along with several barns,
feed lots, etc. He engaged in general farming and stock raising
and in feeding both cattle and hogs. Among the horses were good
grades of Clydesdales. He was active in Masonic work in which
he was faithful and found much pleasure. After his death,
his widow, Plutina, lived with her daughter, Nora, and died at
age 85 from shock after having been struck by a farm truck in
the farmyard at Nora's.

(d). Roll 1886 d. Sept
17, 1960 (emphysema), m. Grace Duncan Dec 2, 1918, born
Sept 21, 1889 Whiting, Kansas
Roll Shirley attended the country
school, spent some time at Kansas State University before going
to Emmet, Idaho where he was with his uncle Birden Hodges for
several months. Upon returning home he joined his father in the
operation of the family farm. Included in the many acres that
they took care of were several pastures. Many days after working
all day in the filed, Roll would load tanks of water on the wagon,
hitch up the horses and haul water to the cattle in the pastures
when the wind had failed to turn the windmills. Farming in those
days was more different that it is today with all the mechanical
equipment available.
Grace Duncan was the daughter
of George and Hattie Duncan. Hattie, her mother, died when Grace
was twelve. She moved to Topeka where she lived and worked in
the Collins boarding House. Later she worked worked in the Fair
Store. About this time she was stricken with rheumatism and was
hospitalized several months and nearly died. This illness left
her with a stiff knee. She then moved to the home of her sister
and brother in law, Kate and Sam Barnes, about 1909, to recuperate.
She worked for the Victor Dinnen Family and during this time
she met Roll Shirley and after a courtship of eight years, they
married. They lived on the Garfield Shirley farm at Thompsonville
until the end of 1920 when they moved into the new little four-room
house built on the Lafe Shirley farm. About 1940 Roll's mother,
Plutina, moved to Grantville to live with Nora. Then Roll and
Grace Shirley moved into the home place. At this time Irene Shirley
and Ralph Nail were married and moved into the little house.
Ralph helped Roll with faming. After Roll's death in 1860 she
continued to live in the home place. She suffered a stroke in
1969 which left her paralyzed on the right side. With therapy
she regained the use of her right hand to the extent she could
write and feed herself. She never left the house after. She had
an heart attack and died November 21, 1872.
