and living in Franklin Co IL in 1860. Living in Hamilton Co IL
with wife Eliza in 1880 census, age 52.
History of
the Fortieth Illinois Volunteer Infantry. - Capt. TILLMAN SHIRLEY
resided in McLeansborough, IL., was born in Hamilton county,
IL was by profession a " farmer." The captain was a
man possessing many good, amiable qualties, and was a number
one officer, always ready for and prompt in the discharge of
his duties. He was a man of good moral principles, ever ready
to vindicate the great principles of genuine morality. He was
a faithful soldier during his stay in the army. In the engagement
with the enemy, on the 6th and 7th of April, 1862, at Shiloh,
he received a wound in the hand, which rendered him unable to
perform duty. After having received good treatment for some time,
he returned to the regiment at Memphis in the following summer
; but being unfit for further service, was honorably discharged
on the 29th day of October, 1862.

"Moses Shirley, son of Reuben and Martha Shirley, was born
near McLeansboro Illinois November 9, 1846 and departed this
life at his home near Belle Prairie April 3, 1924 age 77 5 months
3 days. He was converted about the year 1861 during a revival
held at Belle Prairie Baptist Church, uniting with that church,
later moving his membership to Macedonia Church. He was united
in marriage to Dica Penina Boyd in August 1869. To the union
9 children were born, 5 sons, 4 daughters, namely John who died
in infancy Charles (Maranda Shaw) died 1918 with son in Spanish
flu outbreak in Benton, IL; Martha (Perry Hatchett) died 1902
Mt. Vernon, IL buried near mother and later spouse Franklin (Augusta
Jane Graddy) of Rankin, Vermilion County, IL died 1958 visiting
son in Detroit, MI Ada (Eli N Patterson) died 1923 Fairfield,
Wayne County, IL Reuben (Lovisa Daley) died 1966 Qulin, Missouri
Clara (Josiah Preston Raney, Madison Jefferson Rogers, lastly
Joe Dunton) died 1966 Havanna, Yell County, Arkansas Noah Robert
(Cora Sapp) of East St. Louis, died 1979 Mattoon, IL but buried
in southern Illinois Lula (Henry Eiserman) died 1927 New Haven,

wife preceded him in death in 1902. He was again united in marriage
to Mahala Daily in 1903 who survives him together with 1 sister
Miss Sarah Page of West Frankfurt, and Nimrod of Macedonia, and
JJ Shirley of Benton, together with a host of relatives and friends.
His last illness was very brief. All that kind hearts and loving
hands could do was done to no avail. Funeral services will be
conducted at Belle Prairie Baptist Church , by Rev. Hubert Perry
and the body laid to rest in the Crouch Cemetery to await the
Resurrection morn."
