Obituaries of the Clarion Democrat - SHIRLEY, Sarah Ellen
December 31, 1908. The death of Mrs Sarah Ellen Shirley, wife
of John Smith Shirley, Esq. of Clarion which occurred suddenly
last Sunday, Dec 27 1908 at about 2 o'clock is one of the saddest
and most impressive that has taken place here. Mrs Shirley had
not been in the most perfect health for some time past but yet
was not ill. At about 11 o'clock the night previous to her death
she suffered a spell of sickness from something she had eaten,
but was relieved adn passed the latter part of the night in refreshing
sleep. The next morning she felt quite well but remained in bed
and at 12 o'clock noon sent word to her physician as to her condition,
saying she felt so well he need not call at that time. At about
one o'clock she was still feeling well as as the family gathered
for the noon meal gave some directions in connection with the
same,. But just as the family was seated for the meal Mr. Shirley
was summoned in haste by his son Frank who had taken some food
upstairs to his mother. Frank noticed a change in her appearance
and spoke to her. She responded by speaking his name, Frank,
and passed into a convulsion from which she never recovered,
nothwithstanding everythnig that medial science and skill could
do was done. Surrounded by her family and her mother, who has
been visiting her for several months, she passed to the world
beyond. Sarah Ellen Carrier was the daughter of Isaac adn Ellen
Carrier. She was born at Richardsville, Jefferson county PA on
March 20 1864. She received her education in the public schools
at Miss Mary J. Stewart's academy, Brookville and at Lewisburg
Seminary, now Bucknell University. She was married to John Smith
Shirley on June 12 1884 at Richardsville. To them were born seven
children, all of whom survive as follows: Frank Carrier, John
thomas, Frances Ellen, Emma Ruth, Charles Leroy F., Margurite
elizabeth, Anna Katherine. Her brother C. Frank, Thomas and John
Carrier also survive her and one half-brother Harry and a half
sister Elizabeth Carrier. Mrs Shirley was the highest type of
tender, kind and loving mother and in her home she was as a queen
on her throne with all of her family as willing subjects. Patient,
considerate and thoughtful she won the love of her family and
also the respect and confidence of her neighbors and all who
knew her. Back of all her life as wife mother, friend or neighbor
was the fact that she had been a sincere Christian form the time
she was 12 years old and this accounts for the admirable qualities
of head and heart she possessed. She was a member of the Baptist
church from the time she became a Christain and died in that
communion. The funeral was held from the family home Wednesday
afternoon at 2 o'clock, the services being conducted by the deceased's
pastor, Rev. R. R. Thompson, assisted by Dr John Ballentine,
the floral tributes and offerings were exceptionally fine and
very numerous. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the
Clarion cemetery. The sympathy for the stricken family and friends
is universal.

John Thomas Shirley,
general agent in Western Pennsylvania for the Connecticut General
Life Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut, with headquarters
in Pittsburg, is among the younger generation of insurance men
in America who have advanced to positions of prominence within
a comparatively short time. Mr. Shirley has engaged in the insurance
field for a period of twelve years, during which time he has
established an excellent record.
Mr. Shirley was born in Strattonville, Clarion County,
Pennsylvania, March 14, 1887, son of John Smith and Sarah (Carrier)
Shirley. After having completed the course in the public schools
and the high school of Clarion, PA and after having taken a college
preparatory course at the Clarion State Normal School, Mr. Shirley
entered Bucknell University at Lewisburg, PA in the class of
1909. After completing his college work, Mr. Shirley became engaged
in a responsible position with a bank at Clarion, PA., which
work continued for several years.
Looking about for a broader field, Mr. Shirley became interested
in the life insurance business, which seemed to offer excellent
opportunities for expansion of his efforts. He accepted an appointment
as soliciting agent for the Equitable Life Assurance Society
of the United States, with which company he made a remarkable
successful record. In 1914 he was advanced by appointment as
supervisor of agents for the Equitable Life in sixteen counties
in Central Pennsylvania, with offices at Harrisburg. Mr. Shirley
acceptably filled this position during 1914-1918. His standing
in the insurance field, and with representatives of other companies,
is indicated by his selection as secretary of the Northwestern
Pennsylvania Life Underwriters Association at Erie during his
residence in that city. president of the Central Pennsylvania
Life Underwriters Association; and representative on the National
Executive Committee of the Life Underwriters Association during
the residence at Harrisburg, PA.
