Thomas Shirley
born 17 September 1797. He was born in New Hampshire according to census, but it's likely in error, should have instead indicated Hampshire Co Massachussets (according to family tradition); Possibly a brother to a William Shirley who was enumerated at Messena St Lawrence Co NY in 1810 census and was involved in several land transaction there in the 1820s; This William Shirley was a resident of Toronto Canada in 1850 when he sold land in St Lawrence Co NY to Thomas Shirley; Thomas was enumerated in the 1830 census of St Lawrence Co New York, age 30-40 (b 1790 -1800), newly married, without children at that point; Enumerated again at St Lawrence Co NY in 1840, age 40-50, married with 3 sons in the household, no daughters; Age 51 in the St Lawrence Co 1850 census, age 63 in St Lawrence Co NY census; He and his wife Hannah Shirley were living with son William in St Lawrence Co in 1870 census, age 72; Thomas Shirley died 2 January 1875, Both Thomas and wife Hannah are buried Pine Grove Cemetery, Messena, St Lawrence Co New York.

"The Shirley`s came from Ware, Mass [ed: Hampshire Co]. They were on their way to Canada when someone told them they were foolish to go to a wilderness and they bought a farm about a mile from Louisville, near where Massena Springs are in New York State [St Lawrence Co]. They lived there for awhile and Grandma`s mother (Jane Shirley) died there.  Mother thinks Thomas Shirley had the home place. One of Grandma Shirley`s sisters, Polly Shirley (Mary), was married to Thos. Steinburgh who lived on Steacy Island in the St. Lawrence River until there was trouble between great Britain & United States (about 1812). They got afraid and left the place and all improvements & went back on a new farm on the 6th or 4th concession of Township of Matilda, Dundas County, Ontario, & some of their descendants still live there. Aunt Polly died at Bearbrooke, Russell County Ont. (near Leanard, Ont. & about 20 miles from Ottawa) and was buried there. I think at the time of her death she was living with her son Thomas Steinburgh who had a farm at Lenard and died there.  Thos. Steinburgh, husband of Polly, died in Matilda & was buried there. In his earlier years he had been a river pilot - lumber. Her grave is located outside of Vars on Force Road.  Her birth date appears to be 1785. " (ed: her death was recorded 20 Feb 1878, Rusell Co Ontario, age 90)

From the Messena Observer, Jan 19, 1940 - Thomas came from Boston MA where his family had lived for several generations. Thomas settled first in Louisville Landing just below the ferry dock. He left two brothers, John and William, in Boston. (Website editor: one wonders if this newspaper is sourced from family who are mistakenly connecting their Shirleys to Gov William Shirley of Boston. He had two sons John and William. Many US Shirley families claim connections to Gov Shirley through family lore, but they are all in error )

married Hannah Howe about 1830, likely in New York; She was age 46 in 1850 census, born New York, widowed and living with son William Shirley in St Lawrence Co NY in 1880 census, age 76; She was born 23 April 1804 and died 30 July 1887.

Email 2013 from Jan - "Grandma (Verna) was born apparently in Massena, NY - on some island that no longer exists...? She married when she was 23, so I think it would be safe to say her birth year was 1908 (?). She lived in Chadwicks, NY for most of the time she was married (near Utica and New Hartford). I believe she met my Grandfather Elmer S. Niles in Utica. After Elmer died in 1955, Verna moved to Sauquoit, NY (just South of Utica, NY - Oneida Cnty) and lived there until her death in 1969. That's also where we (myself and 5 brothers and a sister) grew up. She lived next door to us. I mentioned MA because Verna's sister Beatrice married and moved there to live with her husband Charlie - we visited there a few times. I forget exactly where in MA though."

Hello Betty,

I'm presently researching my family name (Steinburg) I've found that my 3grt grandmothers names was Mary Polly Shirley. I have pasted the information that was sent to me below. She married Thomas Steinburgh. I'm stuck here. I know their first child was born 1811 in Osnabruck twnp Stormont county. So I assume they were married around 1809. On the 1851 census in Matilda twnsp Ontario. They are recorded as Americans and Baptists. I was wondering if you could enlighten me about them

Letter written by C M Billings of Billings Bridge, Ontario Canada on 23 June 1928
