1(i). Ezekiel Shirley
born about 1776 VA; He appears in Scott Co KY as early as the 1796 tax list for that county; He appears in the minutes as a member of the Great Crossing Church; Mentioned in the 1797 estate record for Richard Shirley, dec'd; He was taxed in Scott Co KY in 1805 in the Eagle Creek area and in 1826 was taxed for 400 acres in that area; In 1828, Ezekiel and wife Dully sold 450 acres in Scott Co KY to Lewis Suggett, apparently in preparation to move to Indiana; In 1835, he was named as part of the Presbytery of the founding of Mt Tabor church near Brownsburg, Boone Co Indiana; He appears in the 1840 Boone Co IN census and thereafter; Ezekiel died 1864 Perry, Boone Co. IN and buried at Mt Tabor cemetery.

"...Ezekiel and Delia (Shirley) Shirley, both parents having been born in North Carolina, where they were married; thence they migrated to Scott county, Ky., where Ezekiel engaged in farming until 1831, when he brought his family to Hendricks coimty, Ind.. and rented land until 1838; then moved to Perry township, Boone county, where his son James...had entered land, on which he resided until his death in 1864, his wife surviving him until the next year. They were the parents of six children, viz. : Dickerson, Elias, Benjamin, Maria, Amelia and James, all deceased with the exception of [James]. 12 September 1861 Greencastle Banner,Greencastle, Putnam County, - Some 'old folks' - A correspondent of one of our exchanges, writing from White Lick, Indiana [Boone County], says: - 'There is an old couple in this place that are seldom found equaled. Mr. and Mrs Ezekiel Shirly are 85 years old, enjoying good health. They have living nine children, forty-seven grand-children, one hundred and four great-children, and nine great-great grand-children or fourth generation - which would make a party of one hundred and sixty-nine descendants of a single living couple. This says Ezekiel had 9 children. We only show 7

married Dulcina "Dolly" Shirley, daughter of Argeland Shirley branch #10. She died about 1865, one year following the death of her husband Ezekiel. Buried at the Mt Tabor Cemetery.

He first appears in records in the 1826 tax list for Scott County Kentucky, taxed on 1 male over the age of 21. He was enumerated in Hendricks Co IN in 1830 census, but was apparently skipped in the 1840 census. He was age 54, enumerated at Brown Township in the 1850 census for Hendricks Co Indiana; He was alive at the time of the 1860 Hendricks Co tax assessment, but not found in the census of that year. Not found in the 1870 census.

2(ii). Elias Shirley born about 1798 in Scott Co KY; Identified as a child of Ezekiel Shirley in a biography of the Shirley family published in 1895. He appears in the 1826 and 1827 tax lists for Scott Co KY as a male over the age of 21 and with 1 horse; He is living in Boone Co IN in 1840 with 6 children in his household; Age 52 in the 1850 Boone Co census; Lived at Perry Township, Boone Co IN in 1860 census, age 60; He died July 29, 1885 Perry, Boone Co. IN

JAMES SHIRLEY of Perry township, Boone county, Ind., was born in Scott county, Ky., February 23, 1819, a son of Ezekiel and Delia (Shirley) Shirley. They were the parents of six children, viz. : Dickerson, Elias, Benjamin, Maria, Amelia and James, all deceased with the exception of our subject. James Shirley worked on the home farm in Hendricks county, Ind., from 1831 until 1838, when he launched out on his own account, worked hard and earned the money to buy the forty acres in Perry township on which his parents ended their days. He later sold this farm and bought the eighty acres on which he now lives. The first marriage of Mr. Shirley took place in Boone county, Ind., in 1839, to Elizabeth Poiner, a native of Putnam county Ind., and daughter of -Joseph Poiner, of North Carolina. Three children were born to this union, viz. : Henry and Parmelia, deceased, and Edward. Mrs. Shirley died in 1866, and the second marriage of Mr. Shirley took place March 25. 1867, to Mrs. Leaner Smith, who was born in Owen county, Ky., January 9, 1830, a daughter of John and Betsey (Roberts) Smith, natives of North Carolina, who both died when Leaner was a child. The first marriage of Leaner was with Daniel Smith, to whom she bore nine children: Louisa (deceased), Albert, Henrietta, Hugh, Willis, George. Charles, Mary and Alice. Daniel Smith died in 1S65, and by her marriage with Mr. Shirley she is the mother of one child, Peter, who was born August 17, 1868, and was married in Perry township, December 29, 1890, to Miss Lydia Stanfield, who was born in Jackson county, Ind., and is a daughter of Samuel and Janie (Smith) Stanfield; one child.
