John Shirley
born about 1825; possibly a slave of George F. Adams of St Mary's County Maryland who was Emancipated May 20 1864; father and mother born Maryland (1880 census); farmer of Mechanicsville MD; May be related to Jetson Shirley also enumerated in the slaveholdings of George Adams; Grandson Marcus Patterson age 17 living with John in 1900 census.

John Shirley served Co. K 29th Regiment US Colored Troops; private; age 36; height 5'9" born St Mary's MD; Laborer; enlisted Dec 9 1864 at Benedict MD by Capt Holland for 1 year term. "Drafted 5 District Maryland". Present on muster rolls until listed as sick at the post hospital at Brownsville Texas since July 16 1865; on list of died Nov 7 1865 at Post Hospital Brownsville TX of Ascites (two John Shirleys of St Mary's MD?)

married Mariah/Mary Contis (son Benj's death cert); born about 1825; slave of Benjamin Adams of St Mary's County Maryland; Emancipated Nov 1 1864 with two children Sarah and George. Her mother was Lucy Contee b abt 1796 in Maryland (indexed as Contes) who lived with the family in 1880 census. Grandaughter Jane Green age 4 also living in household in 1880 census; she died before 1900 census when John was listed as "widowed". Mother Lucy Contee enumerated with husband David Contee in Dist 4 Charles Co MD in 1870 census.

2(iii). George Luther Shirley born 9 May 1898 (WWII draft), age 2 in 1900 census (son), age 11 in 1910 census (middle initial L); He lived in Washington DC in 1920, 1930, age 38 widowed no children, and at the time of the WWII draft in 1942.

married Alice______ She was identified as spouse in the 1920 census household; She died prior to the 1930 census

2(v). Lena V Shirley born about 1909 MD, age 9 in 1910 census

1(iv). Sarah Sherly born about 1858, age 12 in 1870

1(v). George Sherly (female?) born about 1862, male age 8 in 1870 ( a daughter named Georgiana b 1862 married Josephus Patterson - both living in family household in 1880)

1(vi). Mary Susan Sherly born about 1863, age 7 in 1870

1(vii). Mary A. Sherly born about 1867, age 3 in 1870

1(viii). Benjamin Shirley born about 1871, age 9 in 1880; living Mechanicsville St Mary's County MD in 1900 census and in 1910, age 38; He died 16 April 1930 in Washington DC, married age 56 (parents named); Buried Mt Olivet Cemetery.
