to Jetson Shirley also enumerated in the slaveholdings of George
Adams; Grandson Marcus Patterson age 17 living with John in 1900
census.
John Shirley served Co. K 29th Regiment US Colored Troops;
private; age 36; height 5'9" born St Mary's MD; Laborer;
enlisted Dec 9 1864 at Benedict MD by Capt Holland for 1 year
term. "Drafted 5 District Maryland". Present on muster
rolls until listed as sick at the post hospital at Brownsville
Texas since July 16 1865; on list of died Nov 7 1865 at
Post Hospital Brownsville TX of Ascites (two

was listed as "widowed". Mother Lucy Contee enumerated
with husband David Contee in Dist 4 Charles Co MD in 1870 census.
