August 20, 2008 Thanks so much
to Fannie for sending Shirley data gleaned from an English university
database project dedicated to researching medieval soldiers.
I've posted the list of Shirleys
who participated in various medieval military ventures here. August 16, 2008 Posted the original will images of Shirleys of Darlington SC
August 4, 2008 Added several generations to USA Shirley branch #34 Ferrers Shirley of Massachusetts. July 29, 2008 Curiously, over the last month, the Shirley Association has received 2 independent inquiries from Italy about Caroline Shirley, Duchess of Sforza (natural born daughter of Viscount Tamworth, son of the 7th Earl Ferrers) The first query was from an Italian architect who was restoring the gardens of the Sforza palace to its historical design. The second query came today from two Italian professors who run an institute dedicated to research in the area. Each Italian contact was nice to send a few images for our use. I've posted those images to a new page containing the biography of the Duchess of Sforza. I've also included full details of an 1842 Chancery Court suit: Shirley vs. Ferrers involving Caroline Shirley's inheritance. July 27, 2008
July 26, 2008 NEWS! Since its initial appearance on the internet, the Shirley Association has presented the coat of arms of the Shirleys of Ettington in the heading of each webpage. To avoid any confusion by our readers, the Shirley Association has decided to replace the Ettington arms and adopt the following arms for the sole use of the association: Paly of Six,, Or and Azure. The similarities to the Ettington Shirley arms are obvious, but it is not without precedence. The unrelated ancient Shurleys of Isfield also adopted similar arms. See more info on the arms borne by persons with the Shirley surname Posted several short biographies and portrait images for descendants of Robert Shirley, 1st Earl Ferrers. July 25, 2008
July 21, 2008 Thanks to longtime Shirley Association supporter Gary for sending some very valuable info for posting to the website. He and wife Judy spent a considerable amount of their vacation rummaging courthouses and libraries in North Carolina, Washington DC and Maryland. This is what Gary emails

July 11, 2008 NEW BRANCH. I've created a new USA Branch #85 for Edward W. Shirley b 1833 living in Botetourt Co VA. DNA shows this family to be matched with Robert Shirley and Susannah Baker of Pennsylvania, Branch #20. July 9, 2008 NEW PROJECT. Are you looking to join the DAR via a Shirley patriot ancestor? I've posted the known DAR certified Shirley patriot lineages here. All you need to do is connect (prove) your lineage to any one of the Shirleys named in the certifiedd lineages. HELP. June 27, 2008 Thanks to a supporter of the Shirley Association for sending her lineage research on Benjamin F. Shirley, son of Jonathan T. Shirley b 1795 of Abbeville SC . Benjamin married Sarah Mathews probably in Carroll Co Mississippi. His family went through the Panama Canal to ultimately settle in Los Angeles by 1880. I've posted this lineage on the John Shirley Branch #2 page. June 26, 2008

June 15, 2008 PROJECT COMPLETE. The USA geography cross-index is now complete for all branches 1-84. This project was designed to help researchers locate potential distant relatives who ultimately migrated to the same location. For example, if you know your relatives are found in Hot Springs Co Arkansas, you might be able to find other Shirley families in the same county. This index will help you find the origins of that other family, and possibly YOURS!
June 8, 2008 Sorry for the delay in replying to emails and posting to the website. My first year of PhD research is complete at St Andrews and I've moved back to my home in Alabama for the summer. Update (20 more branches indexed) The Shirley Association has started a new project to scan each of the 80+ USA branches to index the state and counties mentioned in those lineage webpages. Information for branches 1-70 are currently complete. More to come each week! May 29, 2008 Added a new Oxfordshire lineage. Thomas Shirley born 1764 Family lived Witney, Ascott under Wychwood and Hailey Oxfordshire and Hounslow Middlesex. May 28, 2008 I travelled to Edinburgh yesterday to search for the origin of Scottish Shirleys. I found further documentation that one of the main families found in Scotland originated in Staffordshire. I found a few items while viewing wills at the archives and a few items at the genealogical society. They are posted on the Scotland page in the member's section. Some of the new items I found yesterday were actually christening records for parishes already abstracted by the Mormon's IGI. Oddly, the births or christenings of various male Shirley children were ommitted from the IGI, while the same family's female children were abstracted (and you can find them on www.familysearch.org). I suppose this will act as a word of caution to me and to all of you as we perform our Shirley research or any other surname research, that the IGI is incomplete not just across its UK parish coverage, but even WITHIN its parish coverage! May 17, 2008 Update (20 more branches indexed) The Shirley Association has started a new project to scan each of the 80+ USA branches to index the state and counties mentioned in those lineage webpages. Information for branches 1-50 are currently complete. More to come each week! May 12, 2008
May 10, 2008 Thanks to Dean Lillis for sending a photo of his ancestor, Clinton Shirley (and children), born 1851 Haverhill MA and who lived Manchester NH. See the photo on the USA Branch #25 James Shirley of NH page
May 9, 2008
I'll try to abstract the will and post that info in the Non-member's section on the lineage page for the Shirleys of Hertfordshire who originated in Brill Buckinghamshire May 4, 2008 Ongoing Buckinghamshire/Hertfordshire Lineage Research Project: Added considerably to the Bucks England lineage of Michael Shirley with new annotations from wills and other documents. Ongoing Buckinghamshire/Hertfordshire Lineage Research Project: Added a new Bucks lineage page covering several Shirley families of Marsh Gibbon, Bucks May 3, 2008 Are you visiting
historic Shirley estates this summer? The Shirley Association does not have
an England tour planned this summer but if you are traveling
to the UK (or a UK resident) and plan to see some of the Shirley
"sites" such as Ettington, Wiston etc, please click
on the contact link at this website to let me know. One emailer
to the Association is specifically thinking about the August/September
timeframe for travel and would greatly enjoy seeing these historic
sites with fellow Shirleys.

His deposition is posted to the family's lineage page April 27, 2008 NEWS On June 18, 2007, Betty Shirley posted information on the What's New page about a planned cleanup of the grave of Sir Horatio Shirley in Dorset England.
Brian Shirley has emailed Betty saying the grave cleanup project is complete and he has sent the Shirley Association photos of the before and after. Congratulations to Brian, George Cardew and Julian Fellowes who sponsored the work. You can see the photos here April 26, 2008 Updated The Shirley Association has started a new project to scan each of the 80+ USA branches to index the state and counties mentioned in those lineage webpages. Information for branches 1-30 are currently complete. More to come each week! April 22, 2008 Added the original document image for the 1493 Northamptonshire Feet of Fine between Hugh Shirley and John Goylyn' and Isabel Rige. April 20, 2008 Updated The Shirley Association has started a new project to scan each of the 80+ USA branches to index the state and counties mentioned in those lineage webpages. Information for branches 1-20 are currently complete. More to come each week! April 17, 2008 Added a new limb to the lineage of Branch 21 James and Judith Garriott Shirley of Culpepper VA. Rev. Andrew Elias Shirley born 1829 was the son of John E. Shirley and wife Jane and the grandson of William Shirley and Elizabeth Clore of Oldham Co KY. I've posted a copy of his 1912 death certificate on the page. Discovered and posted the maiden name for Martha, the wife of John W. Shirley of Metcalf Co KY, the newest Shirley branch #84. Added the death certificate for Ed Shirley of Tompkinsville KY. He famously provided a slave narrative to a WPA interviewer. Read his narrative here April 7, 2008 Family Reunion Reminder - The descendants Benjamin Emaziah Shirley and John Riley Shirley who settled in the Alpharetta (Stono),Georgia area around 1850 from Abbeville District, South Carolina. The reunion is held yearly on the first Sunday in November at the Alpharetta Senior Center. Contact FES021735@bellsouth.net for more information. Please send your
notices of upcoming and annually scheduled Shirley family reunions
and we will post
the announcement
to alert your relatives of the event. April 6, 2008 New Shirley Project. The Shirley Association receives email inquiries virtually every day from researchers tracing their Shirley lineage. Since the number of posted USA branches is now over 80, it's very difficult to pinpoint ancestors by remembering exactly what county and state every member of those lineages migrated to. The Shirley Association has started a new project to scan each of the 80+ USA branches and index the state and counties mentioned in those lineage webpages. Information for branches 1-10 are currently complete. More to come each week! Thank you, Jeanne Shirley, for sending photos of her ancestors Clifford Vernon Shirley and Francis Marion Shirley and wife Sarah. This is USA branch #15 John Ambrose Shirley originating in Marshall Co Indiana Thank you, Kirk Smith, VP of the Russiaville Indiana Historical Society for sending photos of Dr. Doctor Jackson Shirley and his wife Waitsel Seward (that's right he was a physician with a first name of "Doctor"). Kirk also submitted thieir newspaper obituaries. Thanks so much! You can find these images on USA Branch #10 Argeland Shirley. New USA Branch #84. John W. Shirley born about 1825 in Kentucky. African-American ancestry living Metcalf Co KY. This lineage includes the famous opera tenor George Irving Shirley
March 31, 2008 The Fauquier/Prince William project continues. The Shirley Association is trying to document the families who did not migrate to SC or KY. Created USA Shirley branch #83 consisting of the lineages of James Shirley b about 1795 Fauquier Co VA and Richard O. Shirley born about 1802 Prince William Co VA
March 30, 2008
March 29, 2008 Spent several hours today finding and re-posting all of the missing photos from our USA lineage pages. Thankfully Betty Shirley came to the rescue and sent all of the photos I could not find. We have decided that the process that created our new historical photo album may have caused some of the photos on the lineage pages to disappear. It's not logical, but that's all we can come up with????
March 23, 2008
March 22, 2008 Finished uploading all USA branches historical photos to the new Shirley Association Historical Photo Collection The collection is presented in the order of the branch number. The USA collection numbers 137 photos. Unfortunately, during this project I noticed that many photos on the various lineage pages are not loading properly. The photos are not to be found on the server. I will need to work with Betty to try to locate and upload them properly. In the meantime, if you have previously submitted a photo and it is not appearing properly on the website, please resend it to me here. March 20, 2008
Added the 2-page image of the original 1693 will of Joseph Sherley, salesman of Colechester Essex England to the lineage page of the London goldsmiths. Joseph's mother was Margaret Addenbrooke who was mentioned in the Maryland probate of her brother's will. [See message for February 13 below] March 16, 2008
Posted a new Scottish lineage. Thomas Shirley who owned and operated the famous Clyde Pottery in Greenock Scotland. This family originated in Staffordshire. Posted a newspaper court case that identifies the mother of Dr. John Shirley of Scotland. It also identifies his father as having been a shoemaker. March 8 2008
Next - I've finally given up trying to get our webhost's search engine to work for the Shirley Association site. I've resorted to using FreeFind, the free 3rd party search engine that you often see on USGenWeb and other genealogy websites. If you're looking for a free search engine for your site, I would highly recommend FreeFind. It even works on your password protected pages, and there's really no limit to the number of pages you can index (unlike the other free search services). You will find the FreeFind search engine on the main index page. Spent some time adding numerous details to the Shirleys of West Grinstead Sussex England pedigree in the non-member's section March 2, 2008 Began the process of documenting the Shirley family who remained in Fauquier and Prince William VA. Added census from 1850 to 1930 for PrWm and a few birth and death items for both PrWm and Fauquier counties. March 1, 2008
NEW! Added a Google search engine for the non-member's section of the website. Here (at the top of the Non-member's index page) February 23, 2008 Added photos from branches 21 through 50 to the Shirley Association Historical Photo Collection February 20, 2008
February 19, 2008 Added the English lineage of the Shirleys of Chertsey and Walton on Thames Surrey. This lineage includes the very wealthy merchant Thomas Shirley of Coleman Street London, who is believed to be the same Thomas Shirley, merchant living in Charleston South Carolina before the Revolutionary War.
February 15, 2008 Added photos from USA branches 8 - 20 to the new Historical Photo Collection. Photos from branches 21 and onward to be added in succession. February 13, 2008 A minor research victory! Betty and I have always been intrigued by a small item in 1660s Maryland. A Thomas Addenbrooke of London appears in estate records in Maryland. He names an aunt Margaret Sherley. The Shirley Association has just determined that Margaret Sherley was the wife of Samuel Shirley. You can find the clarification in Edward Addenbrooke's 1664 PCC Will, brother of Thomas. We've got the entire will (pdf file) on the Maryland pages in the Member's section - follow the "Miscellaneous" link. Now, who is Samuel Shirley? Well, there's a Samuel in the London goldsmith's family. And we see a Samuel Shirley being transported to Virginia in 1668 Lancaster VA records. UPDATE: We know who Samuel Sherley and wife Margaret Addenbrooke are. See the newly updated London Goldsmith's lineage and scroll to the bottom. February 10, 2008 A exciting new project! The Shirley Association has created an album of images from our collection of historical photos submitted by friends and members over the last 30 years. You can now scan photos all in one location. You can also see these photos posted in the various branches pages if you want more details. February 8, 2008 Update: Everything seems to be working now. Membership entry, message boards etc. Thank goodness. February 6, 2008 Now added...
Two new lineages for Dorset Shirleys to the England lineages page.
February 5, 2008 We apologize for any disruption of service to our members and guests. Our long-time webhost suffered a number of problems during their service upgrade Hopefully, things will go a bit more smoothly
January 20, 2008

January 17, 2008 Member, Bill Shirley, has submitted a handwritten history and a typed history of his New Brunswick Canada family. Both items are fairly old. This family originated in Kilkenny Ireland. January 14, 2008 As mentioned a few days ago, Betty Shirley is busy cleaning out the remainder of her "closets" posting lots and lots of small items, photos, letters etc to the USA lineages pages. She has informed me that she has just completed updating branch #23 David Shirley of Darlington SC (ancestors to Pike Co AL etc). She's been updating other USA lineages for the last month, so be sure to check your lineage for any updates not announced here. January 12, 2008
Added 2 new Shirley lineages to the Canadian pages. 1) John Shirley family of Burton Sunbury, New Brunswick, and 2) James Shirley family of Charlotte, New Brunswick.
The Shirley Association has made an exciting connection for one family across the Atlantic. Added a new Shirley lineage to the England pages. John Shirley born about 1803 Manchester lived St George in East Middlesex (London). Family moved to New York and Rhode Island USA. January 11, 2008 Our webhost, Mysitespace, has informed us that they are migrating their system to a "new and improved" version. However, the company has alerted us that their improvements will take 1 week to implement. Our site will be frozen (no new updates) between January 18 and January 25. I'm not sure if that includes the new query board, but I would assume it does. In other words, if you post a message on the query board during that period, it might be lost when the upgrades are finalized. Janauary 9, 2008
Member Bill Shirley submitted a huge update to his lineage of James Shirley who migrated from Kilkenny/Carlow Ireland to New Brunswick Canada January 6, 2008 Added a 2nd lineage to the England Shirleys of Barford St. Michael Oxfordshire page. The 2nd lineage has not been officially connected to the 1st but this family are the ancestors of the Shirley DNA project participant. January 5, 2008

January 4, 2008 Added a considerable amount of information to the lineage of William Shirley of Great Barford Oxfordshire and also updated the lineage of John Shirley of White Co TN (Branch 24). As a reminder, Betty Shirley is still uploading lots of photos and information to the USA lineages (cleaning out the closets). So be sure to periodically check your USA branch for new information.
COMING! I am currently abstracting the key information out of a dozen or so English Prerogrative Court of Canterbury (PCC) Wills for Shirleys at the moment. The project is expected to be completed this weekend. |
Aug 14, 2008 The following updated DNA marker profiles have been posted to their respective haplotype webpages
Aug 1, 2008 Three R1b extended marker results have been posted. Branch #24 John b 1780s and Mahala Frost, Branch #41 John Pinkney Shirley of Choctaw AL, MS, and Branch #53 Jacob Shirley 1812 liv. Warren Co. TN 1834 July 22, 2008 Match! Posted 13-25 markers for the Shirleys of Shouldham Norfolk. These results confirm a match with a large group of US Shirleys in the R1b haplotype. July 19, 2008 Posted a DNA result for the Shirley family of Shouldham Norfolk England (now living in New Zealand). They are R1b haplotype and appear at first glance to match a large number of English and US families in that haplotype (1 marker off on a 12 marker test). Extending DNA results to more markers will provide a confirmation of any matches. July 13, 2008 Discovery Connected a DNA participant's lineage in Haplogroup I1 to an established Shirley Branch (#20) thanks to the info we received from the test. July 11, 2008 A new DNA result has arrived for the family of Edward W. Shirley b 1833 living Botetourt VA. (Haplogroup I1) This family is not related to the Patrick Shirley/Sharkey family of branch 18 who also lived in Botetourt VA. Results for Edward's lineage point to a connection with Branch 20, Robert Shirley and Susannah Baker of Pennsylvania. June 21, 2008 News. New DNA results from Branch #16 William Shirley (of Mercer KY) shows a match with the Shirley families of Culpeper VA, Adair KY (and Spotsylvania VA), White Co TN etc. Long-time Shirley Association member Elwood Shirley once asked relatives about the origins of his Kentucky family and they replied Culpeper VA. This exciting result seems to confirm Elwood's relatives' response. Now, the task is to find a William Shirley b 1788 in the lineage of the Shirleys of Culpeper, known as Branch #21 James and Judith Garriot Shirley. June 8, 2008 Updated results (markers 38-48) posted for E1b1b1 haplogroup Branch #4 Benjamin Shirley (m. Hughes) of SC - descendants via son Nathaniel May 22, 2008 FTDNA recently reformulated all of our Shirley haplotypes thus allowing further distinction among family branches. Betty and I will be changing these identification codes on the website in a few days. We received the first results for a descendant of Benjamin Shirley and Elizabeth Hughes of South Carolina. As expected, the markers match the other families of that area. May 1, 2008 Added a new and exciting DNA result for the R1b1 haplotype. This new Middlesex lineage is only 1 marker off from the Shirleys of Long Crendon (Ludgershall/Brill) Bucks. We fully expect extended tests to confirm the match. The Long Crendon DNA is the closest match to the Shirleys of Ettington. There is still a remote possibility of establishing a match between the two, but the Shirley Association needs many more Long Crendon/Ludgershall/Brill DNA results to form a common marker pattern for the group. April 22, 2008 Continued to add more 38-67 marker extensions for two E3b participants. March 22, 2008 Added a few 38 - 67 marker extension results for participants in the E3b haplogroup. I have also restructured the 3 main marker results pages to allow for these longer test results. February 23, 2008 New extended results posted today from the Kidlington Oxfordshire lineage continues to match the main USA E3b DNA profiles. October 28, 2007 NEWS. Haplotype I - DNA results show a match between USA branch #20 Robert Shirley (married Susan Baker) of Springfield, Bucks County Pennsylvania who was likely Scotch-Irish and branch #58 Thomas Shirley b 1797 New Hampshire whose family lived in Messina New York. Robert Shirley had a son named Thomas (b 1776 in Bucks PA), so the direct linkage between the two families is still a mystery. Of course, the birth of Thomas Shirley of branch #58 in New Hampshire immediately creates a potential research link to the main New Hampshire Shirley family (branch #25) who were of Irish ancestry (and more likely Ulster Irish which consisted largely of transplated Scots). It's important to note that the the Shirley DNA project has only 1 particpant who supposedly descends from branch #25 and that person's DNA haplotype is R1b1 rather than haplotype I, the group shown for the above branches #20, #58, #44 and 2 other unlinked lineages; therefore, we desperately need additional particpants from branch #25 to confirm that branch's DNA marker profile. New participants from that branch will not only help research targeting their own family's origins, but possibly help sort out so many other Scotch-Irish lineages. Are YOU a descendant of the New Hampshire Shirleys in branch #25? If so, please consider participating in the Shirley DNA project. Just click on this button....
October 23, 2007 NEWS. Haplotype E3b1 - DNA just confirmed that branches 27 (brother of branch 26) and 28 are related. Frederick Co VA. October 20, 2007 INVITATION TO JOIN THE GLOBAL E3b PROJECT Greetings from the E3b Project, If you have a predicted or tested E3b haplotype, and haven't yet joined our project already, I would like to encourage you to do so now. We currently have pver 640 members and we're growing rapidly. With a team of knowledgeable project administrators, and a group of collaborators, this project is a fantastic resource for any E3b who wants to better understand his results, matches, origins, where he fits within the overall E3b tree, and more. It takes only a minute to join. Just visit the project's website at http://www.ftdna.com/public/E3b -- click the Request to Join This Group link at the top left, sign in to your MyFTDNA account, and click the small Join button on the bottom left, below the project description and surnames. It's that simple! You're also invited to visit two new E3b project supplemental websites: Haplozone Double-Helix Finally, if you have exact or close matches on your Y-DNA Matches page at FTDNA, please let them know about the E3b project and invite them to join as well. The more information we have about you and your matches, the more we can learn about your cluster, your subclade and about E3b overall -- and then we can pass that knowledge back to you, our members. Looking forward to your participation in the E3b project! Sincerely, Denis Savard
June 8, 2007 More Fascinating Results New DNA results for a group of Shirleys from Portsea, Hampshire England (1700s-1800s) match the largest American Shirley grouping in the E3b haplogroup. This is the third non-US family to match this E3b group.
March 16th, 2007 GREAT NEWS! Thanks to the participation of so many people in our DNA project, the Shirley Association can now announce a genetic match between the largest group of Shirleys, the E3b Haplogroup, living in the USA and an ancient group of Shirleys from Brill, Buckinghamshire England. Let me explain how this has come together. Check an important connection we learned about in Sept of last year. I posted about the Ireland and the USA E3b connection under the Sept 18th and 19th 2006 post below. You may want to scroll down to those dates and read. Last year I met the Shirley descended from the Ireland group on Sunday in Kent and the following Sat at the Ettington gathering I met 2 sisters who became interested in the Shirley DNA project. They said they were going to talk to their brother about doing the test. Dec 30th 2006 they emailed me to let me know they had just ordered the DNA kit. The results came in a few days ago for the 1-12 markers and they matched the Ireland Shirley's DNA and it also matches with our Shirleys in the USA E3b Haplogroup. Last night the results came in for the 13-25 marker test and it continued to match. THIS IS EXCITING NEWS! The Shirleys of the E3b group are connected to the Brill Buckingham Shirleys who are an old line in Buckingham. Members can visit the Buckingham County web page on our site to see how far back the Shirleys were there. No doubt the Ireland Shirleys went from England to Ireland in the 1600-1700's. I'D LIKE TO HEAR FROM OUR E3B Shirleys!!! Isn't this great news??? March 14th, 2007 Update: Kit # 16625 matches with kits who did the 1-12 marker tests only, 10973, 14206, 16565, and continued to match on the two kits who did the 1-25 markers kits #8434 and 8759. I would assume the Kits who only did 1-12 marker test would have continued to match had they tested the 13-25 markers. See Haplogroup R1b1 Chart. (yellow area of the chart). January 22nd, 2007 Since the last posting, Kit #73699 result has come in and you will find the results in the Haplogroup R1b chart in the cream color section of the chart. It matches several other lineages. Also kit #76256 results have come in and you will find this posted in Haplogroup I chart in the gray color area of this chart. You can see who the results match when looking at the lineages appearing with it in the gray section. Our thanks to those who have done the DNA testing and I see we have 4 more who have signed up since these results have come in. I appreciate your support in helping us build the connections thru DNA. Please be sure to promptly return the kit after you have received it. I see one ordered but not sent back to the lab in May, 2 in June and 1 in August of 2006. It would be very helpful if you could please do the test and mail the kit back. If you have any questions about it, please email me at Bettyshirley@comcast.net Thank you!
November 29th, 2006 Since our last posting on this page, we have received the following results for kit #67158 & #72670 and both are in Haplogroup I. These results show connection to the Staffordshire Shirleys in England. Results for kit #73699 also came in for Haplogroup R1b1. Go to the DNA chart pages and click on the Haplogroup I or R1b1 and find the kit number on the right side of chart. I just realized we have not added #73699 to color chart but will get that done ASAP. In the mean time it will be under Noah branch #81. We already have one posted for Noah on the chart. An extended test result is in for Kit #63957 in Haplogroup E3b descendant of Benjamin and Eliz. Hughes Shirley, branch #4. September 22nd, 2006 From Raymond A. Shirley Sr. rshirley@icx.net Y-DNA tests results have indicated a shared Most Recent Common Ancestor among the descendants of Thomas and John Shirley (VA?, NC, SC?, White & Marion Counties, TN and Jackson County, AL), Joseph Kinsey Shirley (Henry County, AL), Eli Wiley Shirley (MS and AR), John Shirley (Adair County, KY), William D. Shirley (NC, White & Marion Counties TN, and Montgomery County, IL), George Shirley (Marylebone, London, England), John Ambrose Shirley ( Lewis and Mason Co. KY, and IN), Thomas Shirley (Fairfield County, SC,and IL and MO), James Shirley (Culpeper County, VA), and Noah Shirley (White and Putnam Counties, TN). There are still many gaps to fill in order to connect these family lines to a specific common ancestor.
DNA chart listing the above branches: See R1b The first record I have found related to my line is the 1800 census, Rutherford County, NC, page 144. Thomas Shirley is listed with two sons under age 10 and one daughter under age 10. Thomas' age was listed as between 28 and 44 indicating that he was born between 1756-1778. The names of three Shirley heads of families began to appear in White County , TN court and tax records by 1811. Their names were Thomas, Champanous (Champion) and John Shirley. The appearance of John Shirley in the company of Thomas remains just as mysterious as the sudden appearance of Champion Shirley earlier.Y-DNA test results indicate a close relationship among their descendants but the exact family tie among these three Shirley men is yet to be determined. The White County, TN 1820 census gives us some additional information about these three, but it also raises some unanswered questions. Thomas Shirley was listed with two sons born between 1810-1820. Who were they? Could one have been Noah born in 1809 and living in White County in 1850? Thomas Jr. born in 1798 in NC so he would have been twenty two years old in 1820. William D. was born in 1800 in NC/SC? (Rutherford County, NC was located along the border between the two Carolinas ) so he would have been twenty in 1820. Where were these two sons when the 1820 census was taken? I have been collecting data and records for over forty years. If you can fill in gaps in my genealogy, I will appreciate it. Please include your sources. From Betty Shirley: New Shirley researchers often ask if I can give them suggestions on where to direct their search. Older Shirley researchers have told me they have run out of ideas for places to search. DNA is giving us a much needed new sense of direction to continue our search. It can raise questions and new thoughts we haven't considered before. We are finding other groups of Shirleys connected to us we had no idea were connected. When they say " DNA picks up where the paper trail ends" they are not kidding. Thank you to all who have participated in the DNA project. If we do not have a representative for your group of Shirleys, will you consider being a participant or if you are female or descend from a female Shirley, can you find a male SHIRLEY to do the testing in your place? Here is the link to enroll in the DNA project. Thank you! (The entire email from Raymond Shirley is in the member area for White Co. TN). September 19th, 2006 The USA and Ireland DNA Connection From Ken 1) migrated from Ireland to America as early as the mid 1600s (for example, to Northumberland Virginia) or 2) the USA groups and the Ireland branch both descend from an earlier common English ancestor or 3) Some of the early USA groups migrated from England while their cousins migrated from Ireland some time later. In any case, they would all share the same DNA marker profile. While there is no tradition of Irish ancestry in most of the USA E3b DNA branches, it's interesting to note that one of the USA branches (#22) has a family tradition of 5 brothers migrating from Ireland to Virginia and then south to Georgia. This branch first appears in Virginian records in the mid 1700s. Of course, this group could have originated out of Ireland a century after the other USA groups migrated while the family still lived in England. Are the Kilkenny Shirleys originally
from England? Stemmata Shirleiana supports that thesis.
It says the ancestor of that group came over to Ireland with
King William's army and settled in the county of Wexford (near
Kilkenny)
September 18th, 2006 E3b Haplogroup! Do we have NEWS? We do! You connect to an Ireland Branch. Please visit the E3b DNA chart. This is really BIG News! I am so pleased to be able to share this info with you. At last we have a connection to a Shirley group across the ocean! Our DNA participant representing this Irish Shirley branch attended one of our meetings in England in June 2006. How delighted I am to have met him and to have encouraged him to do the DNA testing. I had no idea how this was going to turn out. Wow is all I can say, and I have already emailed to tell him how appreciative we are for his participation in the DNA project. I am reflecting back to May 2005. (You can see the entire posting below). In that posting we had found a connection between the Shirleys of Adair Co. KY, and TN Shirleys with a Shirley family in Australia. We had info as to where in England the Australian Shirley's ancestor came. I said "This is the first group who we have found with International connections. May this be just the beginning of more connections across the ocean. DNA is working!" I was so encouraged about this and I felt inspired to go to the Shirley Reunion in TN last summer. (I have posted this story before but I just want to mention it again). What a wonderful adventure the trip had been for me. I met with a Shirley in GA who was about to have surgery again and could not make a trip to the area I was going to be. Since I flew in and out of Atlanta Georgia I was able to make arrangements for lunch with him, his wife and daughter. At this meeting, he presented me with a check for $1000 and I said I would use it to go to England to encourage the Shirleys of England to participate in our DNA Project. So I was on a trip in GA because of our International find, and with that money it helped pay for my way to England. This gave me the opportunity to meet our Ireland Shirley and encourage him to do the DNA. Now we have another International Shirley connection, all because of the GA trip. Remember, the Shirley in Atlanta who had the surgery died a few weeks later. I know he is smiling! THANK YOU! The question: Are all branches in USA E3b Haplogroup descended from the Ireland Shirley group OR do they share a common ancestor a few generations earlier, perhaps in England??? The next step in our on going Shirley research. If you would like access to the Ireland Research records on our site, and there are quite a few, please join the Shirley Association. It is only $20 per year and you are helping to support this work. If you are a member and would like to make a donation to help with additional DNA projects, please go to top of this page and make a donation in the tip jar. Thank you! Betty Shirley
September 10th, 2006 Since the last posting, results for the following kit numbers with either new results or extended results have come in. 10365, 11344, 13881, 15017, 20430 and 34335. These are 13-25 extended test on previous tests. 64897, 65656, 66774, 67158, 68064, N18270, N23721
June 28th, 2006 The Shirleys of Caroline and Spotsylvania Co. VA New DNA results have come in yesterday. Once again we are amazed to learn of another established branch of the Shirleys being related to the Spotsylvania Co. Shirleys. They are James and Judith Garriott Shirley branch #21 of Culpepper Co. VA Quite a large grouping has surfaced "as related" because of DNA testing. Our thanks to the participants for with out them, this info would be unknown. Let's review those related in this grouping. (It's been awhile since this page was updated so some info may appear here that hasn't been posted on this page before).
