From: The English
Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers"
.......these
Separatists and Brownists for contumacy, referred to Aldgate Ward as a
"nest of Non-Conformists." Here was erected the famous Bury Street
Chapel just back of Heneage House-- the first Conventicle of these religious
rebels who gave the Espiscopal hierarchy so much trouble in that century.
Heneage
House went the way of all medieval buildings a hundred years ago in the
evolution of modern London. Not a vestige now remains of
the "great House large of Rooms" where once these Pilgrim
leaders--Bradford, Cusman, Mitchell and Southworth--lived and planned with
Weston and [James] Shirley (probably Ironmongers Hall) the details and
prospects of their epochal venture. The "fair Courts and Garden
Plots" of Heneage house, decribed by Stowe, are now convered with
business blocks and wholesale warehouses. The oldest Jewish Synagogue of the
Restoration shelters a congregation professing that ancient faith on
part of the original estate. The site of this interesting house is well known
and its connection with such a tremendous event in the history of America and indirectly of
the world marks it as a milestone of a pilgrimage which began in Scrooby and
ended in Plymouth Massachusetts. As such it may
well be designated as the only Pilgrim shrine in London. It is more worthy
of rememberance that the quays of Southampton and Plymouth, England, where brief stops
were made, the last named port being an unintentional anchorage in the stress
of navigating difficulties. The site of Heneage House calls for equal
commemorative notice.

Diary of Ralph Josselin (Private Collection)
Sunday
2 February 1668 A very dry, calm, warm Jan. but the night wet. but
sun shone, the lord good to me in his word and worship: Mary at White Colne
with Mr Shirly who
preached there. lord let the word prosper. Johns
hand very ill(,) lord sanctify this affliction to
him.
Tuesday 3 October 1676 my sister Dorothy
went from me, we parted in much kindness. I sent them not empty away. I was
much in my thoughts to buy the Newhouse lands in Colne, but I found Mr Eldred
was backward. at night Mr Shirly came to Mary , which seemed a speaking
providence to the contrary. my wife was ill pleased
with it. I submit to god.
Friday 23 November 1677. Heard
of the death of James
the eldest son of Mr [ Shirley. ] who made great
love to my daughter and then fell off. a mercy she
is not a widow. she never showed respect to any
young man but to him. god warn my son and do her
good by it.
