Posted by Tony Coffey on May 23, 2003 at 13:56:48: - I have the following Shirley ancestry on my mother's side and am keen to make contact with those of you who may have similar interest. My GGGGGF was Thomas Shirley B1774 he M Elizabeth Eaton.

Email August 2016 - I am a descendent of Thomas Shirley and Rebecca Hinds through Alice/Eliza Shirley. Tony Coffey is a known cousin. Albert Thomas Shirley (or Williams) was Reuben Philip Shirley's son with Mary Ann Williams. Having done many searches over the years to find a marriage for Reuben and Mary, it looks as though they never did. Mary Ann is listed as Shirley on the 1871 census with Reuben and when Reuben married Jane Richards he is listed as a "widower". I have since found Albert Thomas's birth certificate where he is listed as Williams rather than Shirley. He was brought up by his grandparents, Alice Shirley and Albert McPherson. There had always been question marks over whether or not Albert Thomas was really a Shirley, however, since taking the Ancestry DNA test, both my mother and I have matches to Tony Coffey who also descends through Reuben Philip Shirley.

Note: there was an earlier theory that the Shirleys of Kidlington Oxfordshire originated at Brill Buckinghamshire. The following conversation was an effort to clarify the known information as of December 2007.

Hello Ken,
As you say the baptism of Thomas is not on the Shirley website. After looking through many Parish Records we found the following Thomas Shirley Father Richard mother Elizabeth bap.privately 10th March 1775. Richard an Elizabeth married by special licence 1774 in Northleigh Oxon. We may have made a mistake when we said the wife of James was born in Bicester. The eldest son Robert was bap in Bicester perhaps this is how the mistake occurred. We could find no Richard born in Oxfordshire so we looked on the IGI and found one born in Oakley perhaps this is a tenuous link and of course would like to know if we are on the right track. Perhaps someone who feels that they have a more definite link to the Shirley’s of Brill and Oakley will have the DNA test and we will see if it matches ours. All the Shirley’s living in Kidlington after Thomas settled there where related to him except one a William born 1801 we could not place him. Lois and I will go back to Oxford Record Office to do further checking
Richard was living in Tackley when he married.

I have been fascinated with the Shirley Association Website, especially the English Section, in particular the Oxfordshire Shirley Family descended from Richard Shirley (m. Elizabeth Wiggins in 1774, Northleigh, Oxfordshire). His great grandson Thomas Shirley (Chr. 30th Sept 1832) was my Great, Great Grandfather on my mother’s side. You show his children as: William John Frank Hannah Frederick

But my Great Grand Mother Sarah (B 12th Mar 1873 – Epwell, near Banbury, Oxfordshire) daughter to Thomas and Eliza Lambourne is missing in your table of descent. (Thomas married Eliza on the 12th April 1857 in the village of KIRTLINGTON – note not Kidlington where Thomas lived, which is nearby).

I have some memories of my Great Grandmother who died (14th Mar 1958) when I was 4 years old; I also have her picture.

What is very curious and important for Shirley Family history is her marriage to my Great Grandfather George Cox at Headington Quarry, Oxford, Oxfordshire on the 7th June 1891. Neither of them knew at the time, or ever knew, that George was a Shirley descendent as well. I have discovered, after much research that George’s father William was an illegitimate son of one William Daniel Shirley of St Ebbe’s, Oxford (born 1826). His father was Joseph Shirley (B. 1781 and was married to Mary____) and interestingly was born in Lower Heyford, Oxfordshire; a village which features heavily in the Working Thesis to support Joan Parish researches. I will continue to research this line and will report further: I am considering joining the Shirley Association. I am happy for this information to be made available to any researcher of the Shirley Family in Oxfordshire, England, and I have full details of Sarah’s eight children and their descendants.

It should also be noted that my mother, Judith Griffiths’ middle name is Shirley after her Grandmother (and unknowingly after her grandfather’s line). Regards Steve Griffiths (Great Grandson of Sarah Cox (Nee Shirley).
