By an Act of Parliament passed in 1559 the Crown enforced an exchange of property with the bishop and Preston was amongst the manors ceded to Queen Elizabeth in 1561, when it was valued at £38 12s. 4d. (fn. 20) a year. Richard Elrington continued as lessee of the demesne lands until his death in 1569. He had married Mary, widow of William Shirley of Wiston, to whom he left his property and she left it to her younger son Anthony Shirley, (fn. 21) the author of a long moral and religious poem entitled 'Witts New Dyall: or A Schollers Prize', (fn. 22) written during an 'idle year' spent with his sister-in-law Mary and her husband Sir Thomas Pelham. He was the lessee of the demesnes in 1608. (fn. 23) Queen Elizabeth in 1597 had granted a lease in reversion to Richard Newman for a further 30 years, (fn. 24) which was acquired by Anthony Shirley. - From: 'Parishes: Preston', A History of the County of Sussex: Volume 7: The rape of Lewes (1940), pp. 268-73.

11(v). Walter Shirley baptised 4 February 1582/83 at St Peter Preston, Sussex, son of Mr Anthony Sherleye; He was "A.D 1584. Buried the 7th of October, Walter Sherley, the sonne of Mr Anthony Sherley esquire", died young

11(vi). Judith Shirley baptised 12 December 1585 at St Peter Preston, Sussex, daughter of Mr Anthony Sherleye; She married 1) Herbert Randolph of Sussex and 2) Sir Henry Mallory

11(viii). Mary Shirley baptised 14 May 1587 at St Peter, Preston, Sussex, daughter of Anthonye Sherley

11(ix). Rev. Walsingham Shirley baptised 25 July 1589 at St Peter, Preston, Sussex, son of Mr Anthonye Sherley; He died 13 Jun 1637, age about 48. He was educated at Westminister and elected to Trinity college, Cambridge in 1608. He was minister of Haynes in Bedford Co. and is buried near the alter of that church.

Epitaphs at Haynes Co Bedford - Here lieth the bodie of Walsingham Shirley deceased, late minister of this parish who died the 13 of June 1637.

Preston Parish Register - "Elizabeth, the daughter of Mr Anthonye Sherley, was bornne frydaye about vi o clocke in the morning, being the xix day of march, 1590"

Note there is a baptism at Preston for Elizabeth Sherley dau of Anthony Sherley on 8 September 1592

12(ii). Grace Sherley She was identified as Grace Cheynell, widow and only daughter of Mary Seaman Shirley in a document dated 1667
