John Shirley born Jun. 11, 1822 in Wurttemberg

Johann Scheverle was born in Germany. He came to the U.S.
from Wurttemberg, Germany in 1852. He changed his name to John
Shirley. He married Christina Eichele, who came to the U.S. on
the same ship with him.
This family lived near the little community of Leota in Scott
County, Indiana. John and Christiana name was spelled Shierley
on the 1880 census of Indiana. Mom always pronounced it like
"Sharley". The 1880 census indicated that the
elder John (father of John Harrison) was born about 1823 in "Wurttemberg".

Obituary - Former Minister Buried Friday; Rev. William
A. Shirley, 76, 175 N. Park Dr., Scottsburg, died Wednesday,
Dec 3, at his home. He was a native of Scott County and was a
retired Methodist minister having served in numerous churches
in Southern Indiana. He was a member of the Scottsburg United
Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, the former Ethel
Dean; two sons, Harold Shirley, Austin, Don Shirley, Scottsburg;
one daughter, Mrs. Lucille Broady, Scottsburg; one sister, Mrs.
Mae Shields, Scottsburg; a grandson, Michael Broady, U.S. Army
in West Germany; six other grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Rev. R.P. Hawkins and Rev. Paul Hedden conducted funeral services
Friday, Dec 5, at Stewart Funeral Home, Scottsburg, with burial
in Bethel Cemetery, Leota.
