2(ii). John Shirley born 10 January 1776, son of Robert and Genny Shirley. Married with young family in the 1800 Fairfield Co SC census; He lived adjacent to his father-in-law John Gwin in the Fairfield Co 1810 census, wife and 1 young daughter, 1 teenage son and 2 young sons in the family at that time. John was given 87 acres in Fairfield Co SC by his father-in-law in 1810. Gwin died that same year. John Shirley was enumerated in the 1820 census of Fairfield Count with an expanding family of children, 5 sons and 2 daughters remaining unmarried and living in the household; He purchased 295 accres of land in Fairfield County from John McWeir/Weir in 1831 and purchased and sold land in Fairfield County several times in the 1830s, the last being 1838. The elder John Shirley does not appear in federal census records in 1840, thus indicating he may have died by that date.

4(i). Caleb Ware Shirley born 10 August 1829, Richland SC; Lived in Chester Co SC in 1860 census, age 30, occupation: Mill Wright; Likely the C W Shirley who served with Hampton Shirley and William Shirley in Co G 24th Regt SC Volunteers CSA; Age 40 in 1870 Fairfield Co SC census. Lived at Dial, Laurens Co SC in 1880. Lived with his son Daniel Shurley's family in 1900 census, age 70; He died February 10, 1909. Buried Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, South Carolina. (His middle name and place of birth are confirmed in the birth record of his daughter Emma Cora Shirley)

I am trying to find information on '"Col" Shirley. He served in the Confederate Army, 1st in the 24th SC INF, CO G and then with AC Earle's Cavalry. This has been a long-term search for me. I inherited his sword which was marked as being carried by "Col Shirley". For years I thought that Col was Colonel and knew that there was no Colonel Shirley in the 24th. I then realized that his nickname was Col. It is further complicated by the fact that he was carried as CW Shirley in the 24th and WC Sherly in the Cavalry. A BF Sherly also served with him in the Cavalry (He was carried as BF Shirley in the Infantry) and they may be related. I'm pretty sure that Col was from the upper part of the state near Pendleton.

Caleb Weir (Ware) Shirley was my great grandfather. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery on Cambridge St in Greenwood, SC. I wondered why his CSA grave stone says W. C. Shirley, but decided the UDC supplied the marker at a later date and reversed his initials. His dates were 1829 - 1909. His wife Sarah Hedgepath Shirley is buried beside him. Do you think "Col" might be "Cal"? My mother told me he was called Weir, a miller in Laurens County, but I have not found any record on him there. He is listed in the Chester County census several times, but I have not yet seen the actual record. Matilda, a twin, was my grandmother, one of eight children with seven living to adulthood.

married Sarah (Sallie) Hedgepath about 1851 in Chester S.C; She was the daughter of John Hedgepath and Rhoda Grubbs. She was born Feb 1833 and died September 1906. (Is this death date correct? She was not enumerated with husband Caleb in son Daniel Shurley's 1900 census household; Caleb was 'widowed'); Buried Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, South Carolina.
