- The public are respectfully informed that the Academy at Bath,
under the superintendance of the Rev J Stoughton is now repopened,
for the reception of Pupils, under very peculiar advantages.
Mr Shirley, an experienced English Teacher, has been engaged
as an Assistant..."

(headline) Paul Shirley late student of the Diocesan Theological
Instiution at Cobourg, and for many years a labourious and successful
Catechist in the Midland District, appointed to the mission of
Camden, Loughborough and Portland in the Midland District.
1843 The Church of England Magazine, Vol 14 page 19 "Society
for the Propagation fo the Gospel in Foreign Parts - Diocese
of Toronto - The society has recently on the recommendation fo
the bishop of Toronto adopted as its missionaries the following
clergymen, who were admitted to holy orders at his last ordination
- Rev Andrew Jamison, for the mission of Brock; Rev Thoams Bolton
Read, for Port Burwell; Rev Paul Shirley for Camden Loughborough
and Portland. It is gratifying to state that these clergymen
and 3 others who were ordained at the seme time have all been
educated at the new theological college at Cobourg (Diocesan
Theological Institute, founded 1842), of which Dr Bethune is
the learned and excellent principal. The society supports 10
students being candidates for holy orders at this college"

- Rev Paul Shirley - We regret to learn from the Kingston News
that the Rev Paul Shirley one of the oldest clergymen in the
district, while performing his functions as Superintendent of
Schools, in the examination of a school at the village of Clark's
Mills suddenly fell down. On examination, it was found that the
vital spark had fled.

3 In the name of and God Amen I Paul Shirley of the township
of Camden East County of Addington and Province of Canada Clerk
being sound in body and mind do make this my last Will in manner
and form following that is to say I commend my soul to God and
my body to be buried Depy at the north east end of St Luke 's
Church Camden I will and bequeath to the Children of my son Doctor
Thomas Shirley all my estate real and personal my goods and chattels
to them and to their heirs to have and to hold for their own
lawful use for ever amounting to about one thousand seven hundred
pounds currency my landed property to be sold by my Executors
and the proceeds together with the money to be received from
persons whose notes I hold all to be vested in township security
or where the interest will be paid half yearly and the interest
only of the money to be given to the children for their joint
support and education this division of my property extends to
the children of my son which may be hereafter born unto him as
well as those that are now born When all the children are of
age the Kates in division of the property will be as two is to
one that is every boy to get twice as much as a girl If my Executors
think it more advantageous for my Grand children they are at
liberty to cause a good house to be built on the lot in the Village
of Newburgh and to pay the Cost out of the money which will be
due from promissory notes all money lent for the use of my Grand
children must be given on bond or Mortgage . I appoint the Revd
W B Lander Rector of Napanee A Hooper and Robert F. Hope Camden

of August 24th - Patriot [newspaper]. The wife of Paul
Shirley was apparently deceased prior to the enumeration of the
1851 census when Paul was listed as 'widowed'

Ireland (death place in dau Margaret death cert); He migrated
to Canada with his parents about 1820. He began to study medicine
in 1834, graduated and set up a medical practice at Napanee in
1841. He is not found in either the 1851 or 1861 census (as yet),
but is enumerated at Napanee in 1871, age 55, occupation physician;

1888 Dec 7 Daily British Whig - OBITUARY - Dr. Thomas Shirley,
another of the landmarks of Napanee, died on Nov. 28th, in his
73rd year. He was not only one of the first residents of the
town, but one of the oldest practising physicians in this part
of the province. Deceased was born in Ireland, his father being
a Church of England clergyman. The family emigrated in 1820,
and took up their residence at Camden East. His father built
the Anglican church at that place. Deceased began the study of
medicine in Kingston in 1834. He graduated in 1841 from which
date he began his practice in Napanee. He continued in active
work until about nine years ago. He was able to walk out occasionally
but not to attend business. About six weeks ago more serious
symptoms were apparent and his decline was very rapid. In 1850,
Dr. Shirley married Margaret Ann, daughter of Daniel Pringle,
of Napanee, who survives him
Directory of Physicians before 1900 - Thomas Shirley was
a native of Ireland and presumably received his medical training
in his homeland. He established himself in the practice of his
profession in Napanee in 1843, assuming the practice of Dr. James
Allen. Dr. Shirley was a regularly licensed physician, but had
not bothered to register with the Provincial Medical Licensing
Board. In 1877, he was investigated when the authorities realized
he was practicing medicine without being properly registered.
Dr. Shirley died at Napanee on November 28, 1887, aged 72 years
6 months. -
"Early Residents of Napanee" - Dr. Thomas Shirley
was an early resident and for years a successful and much respected
physician. He was a son of the Rev. Paul Shirley, of Camden East.
He died here. Mrs. Shirley and her daughter are still residing
at the old home.

and Addington Co.

2(iv). William Alexander Shirley born 11 October 1858,
Napanee Ontario, age 13 in 1871 census, age 22 in parent's 1881
census household. He died 11 October 1934 at Wheeling, Ohio Co
West Virginia USA, age 76. Buried Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling
