Ship passengers Shirley and variations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by Dena Jackson Burrows on December 29, 2002 at 16:42:28: I found some passenger lists with Shirley and variations of
the name. Just thought I would post them here, maybe someone
can link up! Shirley's on ship
London, England to New South Wales
The third fleet of 9 ships - Active, Admiral Barrington, Albemarle,
Atlantic, Britannia, Matilda, Queen, Salamander, and William
and Ann, arrived in 1791, with over 2000 convicts. The report
states that 194 male convicts and 4 female convicts died during
the voyage, their names are not noted. The ship Mary Anne and
Gorgon are sometimes listed as in the 3rd Fleet but the vessels
and their sources from the Australian National Archives lists
them in the 2nd Fleet. SHIRLEY James M Middlesex 7 --- "to what port or place - Fort Cumberland, North America"

South Carolina Shirley line -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by Bob Edmonson on December 24, 2002 at 19:33:10: In the 1820 South Carolina census in the Pendleton District it listed two James Shirley, Nathaniel Shirley, Smith Shirley and William Shirley. In the 1830 Anderson County census for South Carolina it lists an Aaron Shirley, James Shirley, Jr., James Sherly Sr., John Shirley, George Shirley, Richard Shirley and Smith Shirley. Aaron, James Sherly, Sr., James Shirley, Jr. and Smith Shirly were all listed at the same residence. I would like to know if anyone has these in the family tree and if so connected to whom? I feel that they must be related but no one has managed to hook them up together. It is very frustrating as I feel sure that they were related and knew their relationship back in the 1850's and 1860's. Can anyone in these three states be of help on this? I would sure like some help in untangling this. My Shirley line came from VA to SC to AL to AR and on to Texas and then to California. Can anyone shed any light? Names common to the later family are John, Delilah, James, Absalom, Nancy, Elizabeth, Sarah, Daniel, William, and Martha. Thank you for any clues you may have to offer. I'm the daughter of Michelle Rooney. Harold Shirley married her mother in 1963 when she was five months old. She knows where all my uncles are. She will have to contact my uncle Dave and find out if he still knows where Jeanette is, as they have little or no contact with her. My mother will check and you contact me at the following email address: Sweetsugababy2@yahoo.com
Sarah Shirley, d/o Richard, Barren Co KY, m. John Read -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by Natalie McClendon on November 11, 2002 at 13:43:02: Looking for any information about the family of John Read, who married Sarah Shirley in 1838 in Barren Co,KY. Sarah was the d/o Richard Shirley & Nancy Green, according to this website. A John Read lives next door to Thomas Shirley (jr.) in the 1810 census Barren Co, KY. This John Read was b. 1765-1784 and had one boy and one girl under 10 years of age. In 1850 Barren Co census a John Read (b. 1798 VA) with wife Sarah (b. 1811 KY) lived near James Shirley (b. 1804) and wife Polly (b. 1806). It's likely these two John Reads are father and son. Ultimately, I am looking for information on a Pheby E. Read, whose mother's name was Delphia Read, and was related to a John Read (possibly his sister). Pheby Read married (or common-law marrige) John L. Combs, who, in 1836, fled Barren Co after being convicted on a murder charge. Pheby and at least 2 teenage children went with Combs. But I notice that in Richard Shirley's will, 1844 (John Read's father in law) there is a William Combs mentioned as living with the family. In the 1850 census, William Combs lives next door to James Shirley and wife Polly, and a few doors from John Read and Sarah Shirley. There is also a John Combs who lives with John Shirley and Wife Mary (s/o Thomas Shirley Jr.). William and John Combs are the right age to be younger children of John L. Combs & Pheby Read. Perhaps when they went on the lam, they left their younger children with relatives. To summarize: Except for the proof mentioned above, all this is circumstancial. Any help proving these relationships would be appreciated. Tabitha and Mary E. IN. I have found no death record nor burial for her. After Julia's death her children were scattered to other families. Menoah (Noah) Smith, son of Benjamin and Susannah Shirley Smith, lived in close proximity to several Shirley families in Indiana. He purchased land from Daniel and Susan Shirley. Ezekiel Shirley and various sons thereof bought most of Menoah's estate items upon his death in 1855. Any suggestions of who Julia's family was certainly would be welcome! John H. Shirley was married to Jemima Zimmerla and also used as a first name Mimi. John H. Shirley was born on 3/15/1827 and died on 9/15/1869. Jemina Shirley was born in 1838 and died in 1929. Their remains are in the Wolf R. cemetery I think in Kansas. I'm looking for any information that might help me track down where I come from. I and my siblings were taken away from our parents by social services in 1971. We have just recently had a reunion after 30 yrs of separation. I have learned that my mother's maiden name was Shirley. Her name was Annie Shirley and she married a man named William Teague. My eldest sister told me that our grandfather (mother's father) was a baptist revival minister who travelled through TX and OK. She also said that he was Native American, though she didn't know what tribe. He lived in TX. My youngest brother had the name Robert Kalvin Shirley listed on his family tree site, as being his name...but unsure as of yet if this is the correct name. Also, my grandfather was divorced from his wife who lived in Arkansas. Does any of this sound familiar?? Thanks! Elly Shirley is the wife of JOHN SHIRLEY. They came from Darlington County, South Carolina to Dallas County, Alabama around 1830, moved to Washington County/Choctaw County Alabama in the mid 1830's. John apparently died before 1840 as a Helen( Should be Ellen ) Shirley is listed in the 1840 Washington County census. In 1845 ELLY SHIRLEY is listed in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. They would be the parents of John Pinkney Shirley, William Washington Shirley, J.B. Shirley, Nancy Shirley who married Harrison Griffis, and apparently several other children. Elly's last name "might" be Segars. Looking for people working on this line or with info on this ELLY SHIRLEY. Story of the Lost Branches of the Shirleys - SC 1790 early1800s -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by Virginia Shirley on January 12, 2002 at 11:09:22: Does anyone else have this story in family lore: 2 or 3 brothers living in SC decide to relocate. Each goes in a different direction (one Southwest toward Alabama) to see what they can find, agreeing to return to parents' home in SC in a year to decide which place to relocate family to, but upon their return the parents are dead and the brothers are never able to meet up again. My husband's grandfather told us this story of his great, great grandfather who was born in 1790 South Carolina. I have heard confirmation of the story being handed down in the family of an R. (Robert?) Shirley. Any other takers? Thanks. Re: Story of the Lost Branches of the Shirleys - SC 1790

was necessary for Absalom SHIRLEY Edgefield Co SC 1790 or so -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by Virginia Shirley on January 11, 2002 at 17:53:39: It appears that my John SHIRLEY b SC around 1790 may well be related to this Absalom SHIRLEY of SC, since it appears that this John's eldest son is named Absalom/Absolem or Abrylem. I saw the things on the Edgefield Co SC page, but I need more info. Does anyone know if this guy could be my John's father -- census records etc? Or when he came to SC or where he came to SC from or what his wife's name was? Or if Absalom had another son that went toward Tennessee/KY instead of south to AL/GA? Did Absalom move away from SC? Do I sound desperate? I have been hitting my head against a wall on this forever!!! Can you help? He moved to Giles County, Tennessee, between 1845 and 1850. On the 1850 census, his real estate is valued at $20,000 and he has 30 slaves. From there he moved to Walker County, Alabama, about 1859. From the census records (1850, 1860, 1880) it appears he married twice and had only daughters. I saw on the Shirley Association website today an 1854 will of Philemon Shirley of York, SC, where he lists an Absalom as one of his two sons. Unsure connections. Hope this is of interest. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by Virginia Shirley on January 11, 2002 at 16:24:43: Surely someone knows about this guy, born in SC to parents said to have come on the boat from Ireland/England (One parent from IR one from ENG). Left SC to explore with plan to meet back in one year with brother who went another route, but parents died and brothers could not make contact. Married Elizabeth and lived in Henry Co Alabama (I have records beginning there...) Been looking for his ancestry for years and can't seem to connect with parents nor siblings. Are you from our "Lost Branch of the Shirleys" as grandaddy called it? Anna Shurley, Warren Cty, GA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by Emory Reese, Roswell, GA on January 08, 2002 at 18:07:55: My maternal grandfather, Perry Jefferson Johnson, married Anna Shurley August 1, 1889, in Warren County, GA. I can find no record of Anna before or after this date. Shurley was a prominent name in Warren County in that era. There is no record of Perry Jefferson from 1889 to 1905 when my mother was born to his second wife, Cordelia Burke, in Wood County, TX. Will appreciate any leads on Anna. Elijah Shirley -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by Emogene Greer on January 04, 2002 at 08:22:16: William J. Shirley born Nov. 6, 1837 was the son of Elijah, born Mar. 2, 1803. W. J. married Elizabeth Slimmons, they had Nancy Ann, my Grandmother. Can anyone tell me the other children? Would like to hear from all who have information on this family. Thanks,
