Walter jr Shirley -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by Donald G. Locke Jr. on July 09, 2003 at 08:49:33: Hi all While I do not have the documented proof yet, it looks logical to me. Refernce: I guess my first question would be is this Walter Shirley who married Maria Lock, the son of Walter Sr. Shirley of Berkeley/Frederick County Va? I am assuming he is but would like confirmation. I believe Maria Lock to be AKA Margaret Lock. Second question would be , The refernce I saw regarding Margaret Riley , widow of Richard Riley remarried to Walter Shirley. According to that refernce, Margaret would have been born about 1747 if my math was right lol. Thus , Margaret Riley would have been age 60 at the time she married Walter Shirley correct ? I guess I am a bit confused because if Maria
Lock is infact AKA So either she resorted back to her maiden
name and or there were 2 differnt Walter Shirley's , 1 married
Mrs. Margaret Riley (maiden name not known) I guess that is all for now, at least until
my new contact shares with me her information on Margaret "Lock?"

Delilah Eidson-9E18 (Edward , Edward , Edward , Edward ) was born in 1794 in Edgefield, Edgefield County, South Carolina. She died in 1874 in Marshall County, Alabama. DELILAH EIDSON-HITSON, the dau. of Edward and Delilah Watson, was b. c 1794 in Edgefield Co., SC. At the time of her father's death in 1809, she had already m. 1) ABSOLEM SHIRLEY in Edgefield. Nothing is known of this marriage, not the time of Absolem's death, nor of any issue from the marriage. The name Absolem seems to have been a family name in the Shirley family and another (?) Absolem Shirley is mentioned in the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy (1) as an heir to the estate of Bathsheba McGehee of Madison Co., VA, in a will recorded 10 Dec 1838, but recorded in Louisa Co. (2) No relationship to this family has been established. Absolem was apparently a good deal older than Delilah because he had leased 250 a. of land from Wm. Doby c 1785-90 in Edgefield Co. (3) The Absolem Shirley mentioned in the will of Bathsheba was her brother and had left three children: Alphand, Sarah, and Elizabeth J. No residence was given. As the widow Shirley, Delilah m. 2) RUEBEN KIRKLAND, b. in Edgefield Co., SC, c 1800. They were probably m. in Bibb Co., GA. (4) This marriage is found in The Compendium of American Genealog and indexed Hitson. Rueben was the son of Rueben, Sr., b. c 1761, and Mary Clark Kirkland. Rueben, Sr., d. c 1840. The family was said to have moved to DeKalb Co., AL, but in 1850 Delilah Kirkland, a widow, was in Marshall Co., AL. Her youngest child was 6 and had been born in GA, so the family had moved from GA to AL between 1844 and 1850. A son, Bird Jackson, remembered that they lived in Groveoak, AL, which is in De Kalb Co., so the family moved there after 1850, and that was where Delilah died--date unk. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Staunton Harold Womens Institute (W.I.) Of particular interest was the similarity of the font cover and screen at Holy Trinity, Chapel Staunton Harold and that at St. Saviour's Church, Foremark. Perhaps this is not surprising as they were built about the same time. But Staunton has the great credit of being built during the repression and tyranny of Oliver Cromwell, whereas St Saviour's was consecrated in 1662 just after the Restoration of King Charles II. Nevertheless, we have two beautiful churches still serving their purpose as places of worship and so those who don't know St Saviour's it is well worth a visit. To mark our 80th year as a W.I. we decided to give a present to a local charity. We chose 'Homestart' based in Coalville in acknowledgement of the good work they do towards supporting family life. At our September meeting we presented a cheque for £160 to 'Homestart' which included money raised at our cake stall at Melbourne Carnival. This contribution will go towards buying presents for a children's Christmas party. Our speaker for the evening was Mr Rob Jones
a clockmaker from Tutbury. He told us about his family being
involved in the industry for several generations and gave an
interesting and light-hearted look at the history of timepieces. Staunton Harold By John Fox This book tells the story of the beautiful hall at Staunton Harold and the people who have lived there during the past 1000 years. Their fascinating family history includes such characters as Robert Shirley, who was responsible for building the unique Chapel and whose son was created the first Earl Ferrers by Queen Anne. Selina Shirley, the evangelical Christian who became Countess of Huntington, was a friend and associate of John and Charles Wesley. Selina's cousin Laurence the 4th Earl, was guilty of murder and was executed. This well-illustrated book brings the story of Staunton Harold right up to date. It tells how the Hall was saved from demolition in the 20th century by what has often been described as a miracle. There is much information about Staunton Harold's 30 years as a Cheshire Home and also about its current role as a Sue Ryder Care Centre. At a time when the Sue Ryder Centre at Staunton Harold is facing imminent closure, this book is a timely reminder of the caring work which has been carried out in that lovely place for many years. as one of the many of them may offer help with a lost link for
me. I do not know if this information will help you, but here
goes. 1- It may or may not be the same Absalem/Absalom/Absylum
(various spellings), but there is an Absalom Shirley b @1826
in Henry County, AL (near Barbour County line - believed by some
to be son of John Shirley b @ 1790 in SC and Elizabeth Shumate
b GA @ 1793) as follows: Absalom is listed in the 1850 Henry
County, AL census p 380 B line 29 as Absylum Shirly age 24 b
AL. His wife is shown as Nancy Gilmore 24 b AL. They list two
children then, William 3 and James 1 b GA (they lived right by
the AL/GA state line). There is a Henry Co land deed from Grantor
Mary A Rigsby Nov 27, 1858 to Absolum Shirley in book H page
34-35. and one in 1870 to Absalom Shirley, Sr. from Jane Corbitt(120
acres). I think that some of this line relocated eventually to
Texas and I think you can find out more on the shirley association
website.I have more info if you want. Ralph & William Shirley - Lancashire -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by Sarah Allison on January 31, 2003 at 08:56:05: Help! On William and Betsy's marriage certificate William's father is listed as RALPH SHIRLEY, a shoemaker. I have been unable to trace Ralph at all. Family legend has it that Ralph was connected to Shirleys of Staunton Harrold (the Earl of Ferrers) - he was "wild" (!) and was excommunicated by his family. There is also a suggestion that Ralph Shirley died young leaving William Watkinson Shirley and his mother in poverty. His mother probably died when William was about 10 and he was then cared for by a Manchester millowner. I don't know what is true and what is myth! Any help would be greatly appreciated. I show him as being born in St. Clair County, AL in 1843, the son of Aaron Franklin Shirley (born 1805 SC) and Sarah (Polly) Melton born 1809 in AL. I show him as married to a Salina (?) but I do not have her full maiden name nor the date and location of the marriage. He served in Co. G of the 7th (Shaver's) Arkansas Infantry and is shown as wounded on 7/22/1864. My last census information on him shows him as living in Independence County, AR in the 1860 census with his father Aaron Franklin Shirley in household 69. The 1870 census does not show him at all in Independence County or in Arkansas. My questions are: 1. Did he survive the Civil War? If so where
did he live after the Civil War? Any and all help regarding this would be most appreciated.
