Thanks for giving me the info about William. I feel that his
parents were William and Ann (probably nee Maul) as they married
in 1796. But I have looked on Family Search.org and cannot find
a son William christened 1799. I am trying to get to the Oxford
Record Office but it is never open when I am off work it is also
a long way from where I live. I have also found that William
1799 had a daughter called Mary when he lived in Lighthorne Warwickshire,
she had an illegitimate son called William but I cannot find
any record of her after he was born in 1842 (his father was named
as James Spicer on the birth cert). I don't know if you can help
me any further or if you know of anyone else tracing this line
of Shirleys. Thanks

I found the 1841 census confusing because of Mary's age, 60,
but after a visit to the records office I found that she was
actually Williams 2nd wife, his first wife was Elizabeth Gibbs
(who was the mother of all of his children) he married her in
Barford St Michael in 1822, then Mary Rodwell in 1837 after Elizabeth's
death and just to make things more confusing he married another
Elizabeth (Knight) in 1847 after Mary's death 1846.
The Mary who was Williams daughter was working as a servant
(on a farm) in Chesterton Warwickshire on 1841 census, her baby
(William b1842) was fathered by a James Spicer/Spier (I have
a birth cert to confirm this) they were not married he was also
a servant at Chesterton (Harwood House).
I have also found that Williams father was actually Edward
Shirley b1773 of Barford St Michael who was married to Anne (they
are both on 1841 census he as a pauper).
I have also traced that Edward's father was William Shirley
m Ann Maule and that Edward was born in Barford St Michael. But
I am stuck as how to get any further back.
