	....	Joel Shirley b about 1803 SC, Moved to Tuscaloosa Co AL as early as 1830 census (unmarried, no children); Granted land in 1834 near Lewis, Aaaron and Robert Shirley's land. Joel was a constable of Tuscaloosa Co. AL in 1835. In the 1837 tax record, he was taxed for owning a metal clock and a silver watch. He was enumerated in the 1840 census for Tuscaloosa Co AL, with 1 male child and 2 female children born between 1830 and 1840. In 1844 Joel applied to open a Tavern. Enumerated in Tuscaloosa Co AL, age 47, born SC. He was not enumerated in the 1855 Alabama State census, nor the 1860 federal census, apparently dead by this date. married Sarah Caroline (Cornelia?) Tierce in Tuscaloosa Co AL; Age 34 in the 1850 census; She was the dau of Benjamin Tierce and Susannah Clardy of Tuscaloosa Co AL. She was enumerate without her husband in Tuscaloosa Co AL in 1860 census children: 1(i). Thomas Smithson Shirley born about 1833 Tuscaloosa Co. AL, age 17 in 1850 census, He signed the 1865 amnesty oath in Tuscaloosa Co. Possibly the Thomas S. Shirley who served in the Alabama 22nd Regt; Thomas is not found in the 1860 census and beyond, but may be the Thomas S. Shirley (b 1834 AL) who is living in Chickasaw Co MS with a 16 year old wife, and working as a photographer. 1843 DB T p 227 Deed of Gift 6 June 1843 from Benjamin Tierce of Tuscaloosa to grandchildren: Thomas S. Shirley, Sussanah Shirley and Maryland Shirley, children of Joel Shirley married Virginia H. Shirley on 18 April 1854 in Tuscaloosa Co. at the residence of Mrs. F. Braswell in Northport AL; She was the daughter of Jonathon Shirley, She is enumerated in the 1865 confederate tax in Tuscaloosa Co. 1(ii). Susannah L. Shirley born about 1837 Tuscaloosa Co. AL, age 13 in 1850 census. She married G.W. Fleet 28 July 1857 1843 DB T p 227 Deed of Gift 6 June 1843 from Benjamin Tierce of Tuscaloosa to grandchildren: Thomas S. Shirley, Sussanah Shirley and Maryland Shirley, children of Joel Shirley 1(iii). Maryland Shirley born about 1840 Tuscaloosa Co. AL, age 10 in 1850 census, age 18 in mother's 1860 census household; She married William Simon Freeman Oct 11, 1860 1843 DB T p 227 Deed of Gift 6 June 1843 from Benjamin Tierce of Tuscaloosa to grandchildren: Thomas S.
