Joel Shirley b about 1803 SC, Moved to Tuscaloosa Co AL as early as 1830 census (unmarried); Granted land in 1834 near Lewis, Aaaron and Robert Shirley's land. Joel was a constable of Tuscaloosa Co. AL in 1835. In the 1837 tax record, he was taxed for owning a metal clock and a silver watch. In 1844 he applied to open a Tavern.

married Sarah Caroline (Cornelia?) Tierce in Tuscaloosa Co AL; She was the dau of Benjamin Tierce and Susannah Clardy of Tuscaloosa Co AL

1840 Tuscaloosa census shows 1 male child and two female children born between 1830 and 1840.

1843 DB T p 227 Deed of Gift 6 June 1843 from Benjamin Tierce of Tuscaloosa to grandchildren: Thomas S. Shirley, Sussanah Shirley and Maryland Shirley, children of Joel Shirley

1850 The following children are found in the family census household

1. Thomas Smithson SHIRLEY born 1834 Tuscaloosa Co. AL, He signed the 1865 amnesty oath in Tuscaloosa Co. Possibly the Thomas S. Shirley who served in the Alabama 22nd Regt; Thomas is not found in the 1860 census and beyond, but may be the Thomas S. Shirley (b 1834 AL) who is living in Chickasaw Co MS with a 16 year old wife, and working as a photographer.

married Virginia H. Shirley, Apr 18 1854 in Tuscaloosa Co. at the residence of Mrs. F. Braswell in Northport AL; She was the daughter of Jonathon Shirley, She is enumerated in the 1865 confederate tax in Tuscaloosa Co.

2. Susannah L. SHIRLEY born 1836 Tuscaloosa Co. AL, m. G.W. Fleet July 28, 1857

3. Maryland SHIRLEY born 1837 Tuscaloosa Co. AL, m. William Simon Freeman Oct 11, 1860
