John Shirley born about 1788 VA; He was enumerated in Pendleton Virginia (later West Virginia) in the 1830 census, with wife and 5 children; Also enumerated in Pendleton VA in the 1840 census, age 50-60, with wife and 5 daughters and 1 son (age 10-15) remaining in the household at that time. Also enumerated in Pendleton VA in the 1850 census, age 62, born Virginia (His wife was enumerated as Mary age 58); No land nor probate document has been found in indexes for this family in Pendleton Co WV records. John Shirley died in 1855 at Pendleton Co WV (Supposedly his middle name was Robert, but we do not have the evidence of this as yet)

1(iv). John William Shirley born 8 September 1826 Pendleton Co. WV, age 24 in parent's 1850 census household; Enumerated in Barbour County VA (later WV) in 1860 census, age 35 (as surname Shurby); The family moved to Johnson County Kansas by the 1875 State census where he was enumerated in that year's census, age 48, Enumerated at Blue Springs, Gage Co Nebraska in 1900 census, age 74, and in 1910 census, age 84; He died Jan 21, 1918 Blue Springs, Gage Co. Nebraska; Shirleys of Kansas and Nebraska

married Mary Jane Swartz on 25 November 1852 at Prunty Town, Taylor Co. WV. She was widowed, age 86 and lived with bachelor son John R Shirley at Blue Springs Gage Co Nebraska in 1920 census; She was born 8 May 1832 New Market Shenandoah Co. VA and died 28 May 1928 at Blue Springs, Gage Co. Nebraska. Mary Jane was the daughter of Jacob Gyle Swartz and Rebecca Cummings.
