1(i). Kelley Shirley born
about 1788 in Chesterfield District (later Darlington County)
SC; He died between 1815 and 1823; Kelley Shirley and William
Kelly, 1st cousins, were sentenced to hang on April 17, 1812
in Darlington Co. SC for burglary. It is not known if the sentence
was carried out.
War
of 1812 Service discharge records (actually a bounty
land warrant document) Kelly Shirley enlisted 27 Sept 1813 in
the War of 1812; Capt Jadwyn of the 43rd regt of Infantry. It
says he was born in Chesterfield Dist South Carolina (later Darlington
Co) and is 23 years of age (at 1815). It further describes him
as being 5 feet 8 inches tall of fair complexion and fair hair
and blue eyes. He was listed as a farmer. Kelly Shirley received
13 dollars of his bounty and pay up to the 17th of May 1815 and
was given an honorable discharge. Bounty land warrant #20,019
dated 1823. Note: The bounty land warrant was granted to the
"heirs at law of Kelly Shirley, deceased" on 17 Feb
1823

a medical doctor who rode horseback to see his patients in China

4(i). William Henry Shirley born Nov 23, 1859 Pike Co. AL; He grew
up in the Troy AL area. He was a road builder and roads in the
area were gravel. The dust may have contributed to his throat
condition. He developed throat cancer and immediately has a tracheotomy.
He could not speak after that and lived 2 years. He died
Nov 1, 1916 Montgomery, AL

5(i). Willie Hill Shirley (daughter) born Sept 22, 1883 Pike Co. AL She
died Dec 20, 1948 Montgomery, AL. She did not marry. Her fiance,
Jack Snow, died at age 20. She was known as "Sister".
She received many certificates of excellence when she was in
school. She was an excellent cook and prepared her family's meals.
She taught Sunday School at Clayton St. Baptist church and played
the piano. She also taught piano. She was tall with a large build,
had bright red wavy hair with fair skin and blue eyes. She worked
as a clerk in the dry goods section of the local store, owned
by a relative. After the store was sold, she became an Avon representative.
She loved to listen to soap operas on the radio.
