1(ii). John Shirley, Jr. of Adair County Kentucky born April 1760 likely in Berkeley Parish, Spotsylvania Co. VA; He was a Revolutionary War Soldier, initially enlisted in the "marine service" of the United States under Capt Gabriel Jones on the ship Venture; His father at one point hired James Kemp as his subsitute in the war; John Shirley Jr moved from Virginia to Adair Co KY in 1807 according to his statement in a war service pension application;The family lived in Mercer Co. KY a few months before settling in Adair co. KY according to his pension application statement. He and his son John W Shirley first appear in Adair County records in 1809 witnessing the will of Alexander Thompson; He was enumerated in the 1810 census of Adair Co KY, age 45+; John Shirley Jr applied for a pension for his war service in December 1832, at age 72 in Adair Co KY; He died on 12 March 1840 in Adair Co. KY (source: Pension records). His will was probated 4 May 1840 in Adair Co KY; SAR Certified

[Revolutionary War Service: Late 1775-Early 1776] State of Kentucky, Adair County Court - On this 3rd day of December 1832 personally appeared John Shirly aged 72 years...He enlisted in the marine servie of the United States under Capt Gabriel Johnes, 1st Leut John Kemp 2nd Leut Peter Stubblefield. He enlisted in the county of Culpepper Virginia, marched immediately to ?Habshole where he went on board a vessel called Venture, from whence he sailed out upon various parts of the ocean, continued in constant service for the full term of his engagement and was honorably disch'd at Hobshold Virginia by his Capt. Upon discharge he immediately enlisted under Capt John Kemp for 1 year, Peter Subblefield Leut, he marched from Hobshole where he enlisted to Culpepper Co VA for the purpose of ?Completing the company, there he was kept in service 4 months then he was marched on to join the main army, went on to his father's in Spotsylvania Co VA when his father prevailed upon him to stay at home and permit him his said father to hire a substitute in this applicant's place, he was a boy and disposed to yield to his father's request, whereupon his fathe rhired James Kemp who was accepted in service of this applicant and then his Capt permited him to remain at home, he was afterward drafted for 3 months and entered the service as a private soldier, he does not recollect the year but it was the year of Gates defeat in which battle this applicant was in from beginning to end and served out his full term, was again discharged, he was again drafted for 3 months in the year 1781 and entered the service under Capt Sanders, was marched on to Little York at the surrender of Cornwallis, before he reached York was at various points on his way, he served his full term for which he was drafted and was discharged, he has lost or mislaid all his discharges, he has no documentary evidence...He was born in Spotsylvania County Virginia. H remaineed in Virginia until the year 1807 when he moved to and settled in County of Adair Kentucky where he now lives, he has no register of his birth, but from the information of his parents he was Born in the month of April 1760 - Statement Dated 3 December 1832, Adair Co KY

1791 May 10 - Spotsylvania Co Deed Book N pg 47 - John Shirley, jr., and Frances, his wife, of Spots. Co. to Jonathan Clark of same county. £22 10s. curr. 129 a. in Spots. Co., conveyed to sd. Jno. Shirley, jr., by his father, John Shirley, Senr., etc.,wit: Thomas Turner, Edmund Clark, James Wilson, John Shirley, SR., William Arnold.

Adair County KY WB D page 256 - Last Will and Testament of John Shirley. Dated 19 March 1838 - I John Shirley being now old and inform in boddy but sound in mind and memory make this my last will and testament revoking all other wills formerly by me . Item. The first I lend to my wife Francis Shirley my estate both real and personal during her natural life after my just debts are paid and at her death it is my will that my three negroes be freed, John Henry & [image in book gutter]. And the balance of my estate be sold and Betsey Bailey have two hundred dollars, and the remainder be equally divided amongst all my children Viz; George Shirley, John W Shirley, Nancy M Coleman, Polly Rogers and Betsey Bailey. I leave Joseph H Coleman and George Shirley my executors to this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the date above written <s> John Shirley Wit: William C Pool, Andrew Hopkins, John S Coleman, Sam'l M Asberry. Proven in Court in Adair Co KY on 4 May 1840 by Jos H Coleman

married Frances Yates on 25 November 1782 (source: family bible) She died on 22 September 1843 Adair Co. Kentucky. (note: the death date cannot be correct as Frances Shirley appeared before a KY official regarding her husband's pension on that same date and she made a statement as to the date of her marriage to John Shirley in October 1845)

1782 - Frances Sherley of Franfurt Ky widow of John Sherley, a Revolutionary War soldier, states that they were married in 1782. [9 Oc 1845] Box 2 Caroline Co Misc Records. "Rev. War Soldier, Misc Mil. Papers"

2(i).  Nancy W. Shirley born about 1783; She married 1st Thomas Coleman on 27 December 1804, (source, family bible); She married 2nd, Francis A. Henry on 11 January 1829

2(ii). George Yates Shirley born about 1785; living in East Fork PO, Metcalfe Co KY in 1850 and 1860 census, age 76, widower; Thomas W. Shirley age 16 living in the HH both census. Earlier Adair Co census indicates he and his wife Pamela may have had only one child, a daughter.

married Patsy Young, on 26 January 1809. She was the daughter of Philip Young. Patsey was born on 27 June 1788 and She died on 9 December 1828. (source, family bible)

2(iv). Polly E. Shirley  born about 1789; She married Edmund Rogers on 27 January 1809 (source, family bible). He founded the city of Edmonton, Metcalf Co KY

2(v). Betsey W. Shirley born about 1792  She married Nimrod Bailey on 18 November 1819  (source, family bible)

2(vi). Benjamin W. Shirley born 22 October 1797 (source, family bible, another page not shown above); not named in the LW&T of his father
