Argeland Shirley  He may be the Argeland Shirley who was christened 20 February 1756 St. Stephens Parish, Northumberland Co. Virginia to Argeland and Elizabeth Shirley (this link is not proven, although certainly intriguing); Argeland Shirley first appears in existing records as a witness to the 1776 will of Greenham Dodson in Fauquier Co Virginia (as Archibald Shirley); He is next listed on the 1776 'rent roll' for land in Fauquier Co VA; Again listed in 1778 for Hamilton Parish, Fauquier Co (as Archibald, with James Moshett, 8 slaves); He and his wife Susannah were added to the membership of Broad Run Baptist Church in Fauquier Co VA 'by baptism" in 1779; He and his wife Susannah were later listed in church minutes as "Dismt South" on 25 October 1783; Moved to South Carolina where on 29 January 1785, Argeland (as Archibald Shirley) was among the original members who constituted the Turkey Creek Baptist Church located near the line between Abbeville and Laurens Co. South Carolina. He lived in adjacent Laurens Co SC where on 17 December 1788 he purchased 200 acres of land in Laurens Co from Daly Walker; He was living in Abbeville Co SC in 1790 when he was enumerated in the census for the Ninety-Six District (Abbeville Co) South Carolina; On 6 August 1791, Argy Shirley and his wife Susannah of Abbeville Co SC sold 200 acres of land on the branch of Walnut Creek to William South of Laurens Co SC; He appeared periodically in Turkey Creek Baptist Church minutes at least through 1793; He moved to Kentucky between 1793 and 1796 when he was next taxed in Scott Co KY with 3 males over the age of 16 and for 7 horses; He signed the covenant for the Baptist Church at Great Crossings in March 1805 (as Archibald Shirley). At the same church meeting, he was chosen deacon of the church (as Arge Shirley). Taxed in Scott Co KY in 1805 and 1806, no slaves, 4 horses and 50 acres (as Archibald in 1806); Enumerated in the 1810 census of Scott Co KY, both he and [unnamed] wife over the age of 45 years old; Taxed in Scott Co KY in 1815, for 4 horses and 55 acres of land; Argeland Shirley died 1818 Scott Co. Kentucky. His LW&T was probated in Scott Co KY (WB D pg 339).

married 1) Susannah ________ (some say Walker).They were married by 1779 when she and her husband joined the Broad Run Baptist Church in Fauquier Co VA (by baptism) in that year; They were listed in church minutes as "Dismt South" on 25 October 1783; She was identified as the wife of Argy Shirley in their 1791 sale of land while residing in Abbeville Co SC. She signed the covenant of the Baptist Church at Great Crossing in Scott Co KY with her husband Arge/Archibald Shirley in March 1805; She apparently died prior to 1814.

married 2) Esther Allen, the widow of William Roach, sometime before 1814. She was named as the wife of Argeland Shirley in his 1817 will; Esther was born Feb 8, 1770 Virginia. Her husband William Roach died in 1809. They were later the parents of Fielden, Sarah, Betsey, Anna, Lucinda and Peggy Roach. Her name appears on the family tombstone of son William Roach Shirley at Bethel Cemetery, Logan Co., Illinois. Her date of death was reported as 1855.

1(v). Elizabeth Shirley Named in the 1817 will of her father Argeland Shirley, then married to ____Wright

1(vi). Jane Shirley born about 1790 Abbeville Co. SC; Named in the 1817 will of her father Argeland Shirley, then married to James Perry; She died 1840 Scott Co. KY.

1(vii). William Roach Shirley born Aug 7, 1814 Scott Co. Kentucky, Named in the 1817 will of his father Argeland Shirley, identified as a minor child under the age of 18; He died Aug 5, 1864, buried at Bethel. He married Elizabeth Dorothy Alsop Jan 11, 1835 Scott Co. Kentucky. She was born Jan 27, 1819 d. Feb 9, 1903 and buried at Bethel. She was the daughter of Spencer Alsop born June 12, 1785 d. July 13m 1829 and his wife Judith Carter born Nov 16, 1785 d. 1847 married Jan 22, 1908. Judith was the daughter of Obediah Cater who died July 26, 1820 and his wife and cousin, Judith Carter born Nov 18, 1755 married March 13, 1781.
