Published accounts of early generations
of this family:
Source: (authority
unknown) "Eight Southern Families" William
Stubley was born in Ireland in 1732. (Another source says Scotland).
He came to America with brothers Edward, James, John and Richard
settling in Augusta Co. VA. From there they separated, one going
to Kentucky and another to South Carolina. Later Edward, James,
John and William settled in GA about 1775. William served
as a private in GA troops in the Revolution and was granted 250
acres at the Ford of McBeans Swamp, 140 acres at Chickasaw Old
Path, 200 acres each in the Parish of St. Paul and St. George
in Georgia.

William
Stubley Shurley
born say 1730; He first appears
in extant records in 1755 when he was taxed in Orange Co North
Carolina. He was also recorded as a chain carrier for a land
survey in that same year. He obtained land and moved to Anson
Co NC in the new lands opening up in the southwest portion of
the state; He recieved several colonial grants in the 1760s,
then shortly thereafter began to sell them; William S Shurley
had apparently moved to St George/St Paul Parish Georgia (later
Burke and Richmond Counties) by 1766 when he petitioned the colonial
government for land
1766 - Georgia
- Read a petition of William Shirley he has been in Province
about 10 years had no land granted him and was desirous to obtain
land for cultivation having a wife and 5 children praying that
250 acres at the Ford of McBeans Swamp whereon he was settled
and 150 acres at the Chicasaw Old Path where it crosses McBean
includeing Kellys improvement and to run on both sides
of said swamp [250 acres granted by the governor]
In 1768 William,
who was then living at St Paul Parish sold his last parcel of
land in Anson Co NC, land that was granted to William Stoutley
(sic) Sherley in 1762; By 1762, William had apparently failed
to take out his approved land grant of 150 acres and 250 acres
in Georgia in the required time, so he requested an extension.
He was granted 250 acres by the colonial governor later that
year; Curiously, William once again reqested 250 acres of land
in Georgia in 1771
1771 William
SHIRLEY Petition for 250 acres on South side of Isaac Woods
land on Withers Branch of St Georges Parish
.lived
many years in the Province 250 acres granted him on Family right
but had now 4 persons in family white and black for whom never
granted land.
William Sold
100 acres of land in St Paul's Parish (Burke County) in 1772.
His wife Elizabeth signed away her dower rights to the land;
In 1779, William complained to colonial Georgia authorities that
his property had been plundered by people from So uth Carolina;
And once again, this time in 1794, William was granted 250 acres
in Richmond County (old St George's Parish)- although this grant
may be to his son, or to another William Shirley; This particular
William Shirley then appears in Richmond County tax lists in
1795 and then again in 1797; This particular William Shirley
sold his 250 acres of land located in Richmond Co GA in 1797
(no dower signed by wife);
married Elizabeth____
.
She signed away her dower rights in a 1772 sale of land by her
husband; Note: She is not Elizabeth Maxwell
children: (See 1766 land petition)
